I don't get video games

I play a few games for about 10 minutes every so often. I had a roommate who could play for 17 hours.

He was really polite when I asked him to turn it down when I needed sleep.

I don't get how someone could play that long. Any thoughts?

I'm not a big gamer either. Occasionally, let's say once every two or three years, I'll really get into a game and play it quite intensively for weeks on end. And then my interest will suddenly disappear overnight and I'll never touch it again.

But the rest of the time, I'm not playing anything at all.

They're quite immersive and addictive though, aren't they? I think some people prefer their entertainment to be interactive. Overall, I'm not sure I do, which is why I don't play them often.

reply

I've played a few that are supposed to be immersive, but it doesn't catch my attention. Maybe it's a personal thing. I don't think twice to pause and put it down.

reply

Yeah. Probably just not your thing. As I say, not much my thing either. But my experience of occasionally playing them quite intensively means I do kind of understand the appeal. They just don't sustain my interest enough for me to become a gamer. I prefer to spend my time watching films. But horses for courses, isn't it?

reply

You can get very focused on accomplishing whatever it is you are trying to do. So much so, you forget about the real world for a while. It is a great escape.

It can be very time consuming, though, as you pointed out.

reply

It makes sense. I'm just in awe of the time people spend doing ot. Oh well. To each his own I guess.

reply

I've gone through stretches where that was almost all I was doing. Probably not very healthy, but I need to get away from reality I guess.

reply

I do that with my journal or sketchbook.

reply

As someone else pointed out, I guess I like interactive entertainment, hence that's why I like video games.

reply

There's no problem. As long as the volume is down or you have a headset if you have a roommate trying to sleep.

reply

Yeah, it's important to be considerate!

I put in maybe 5000 hours of gaming between Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 & 4 during my drinking days. Since I quit drinking, I cannot game. Like at all now.

reply

I'll tell ya, after my my medical situation stopped me from drinking, I've toned down on a lot of hobbies.

reply

Have you thought about picking up new ones? That's what happened to me... I fell back into my hobbies I had as a teenager, before I started drinking ironically.

I do every now and then hop into my Fallout 4 save that I spent hours upon hours of drunkenly building and fine tuning settlements. The details, my word the details...and I don't remember doing any of it.

reply

I have new ones. Carving is a big one now.

reply

I guess you can practice your new hobby on Thanksgiving. 🦃

I love deboning turkey, duck, and chicken, stuffing them with meat loaf, wrapping them together, put on a layer of bacon, and smoking them to perfection.

This guy is great to learn from.

Which games did you play? I prefer the ones with a great storyline and realistic graphics which make me feel as if I entered into a movie.

My first premium game was Star Wars Jedi Knight 2 and I stayed up all night after I passed the Jedi trials and obtained a lightsaber and powers of the Force. I easily spent 12 hours between smashing things in the Jedi Temple and the Trials. It was a blast!

Grand Theft Auto, Alien vs Predator 2, Assassin's Creed, Star Wars Jedi Knight, Postal 2, and The Sims are my favorites.

Right now, I'm playing GTA 5 and can easily spend an hour just driving around with the radio on checking out the scenery. I used to watch sunsets. Or take a hike in the country where I once saw a large commercial airplane crash into a mountain and explode. And I spent hours driving on the sidewalk watching people fly up in the air or committed crime in order to have police chases.

I don't play as much now, but it was a hoot when I did. Better than TV - no ads.

I'm playing Assasins creed games backwards. I'm on AC2 now

I skipped that one. I played 1 and 3. My favorite was the American Revolution one. Very educational and immersive. I don't know how people survived living in the woods. Repeatedly mauled to death by wild animals.

Eventually, I want to play the Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece games. And then move on to Red Dead Redemption and others.

reply

I started with AC Valhalla where you play a Viking. Then I did Odyssey which takes place in ancient Greece. Then the Egypt one... Origins. Then I did Black Flag where you're a pirate. AC Rogue you play an Assasin who becomes a templar and connects some games. Then came AC3 where you're a native American. Then came Unity where you're in France. Then Syndicate which is Steampunk London. So now I'm in Italy 1480 something. I'm enjoying my voyage in the AC universe. Oh and almost forgot the new one Mirage... you're in Baghdad, which is basically a prequel to Valhalla.

I also played Rogue and have Liberty and Black Flag left to play.

I'm the world's slowest player now. It used to take me 6 months-1 year to finish, but I rarely play now so it's around 2-3 years. I'm at least 3 years away from buying another game. That France one sounds good.

I taught myself coding and used to build my own games. I have total respect for the professionals who create them because of all the work they have to do.

Same, some games are really cool to just explore and look great, GTA Vice city was the first of those for me.

I was meandering around Farcry 3 island once wowing at the scenery , I got out the car to look better at a waterfall and got eaten by crocodile.
