First time I've seen this question... This is a tough one, but I think it would help to check out my highest rated movies on IMDB. It's especially difficult because there are multiple factors I think of.. My favorites vs. best ability, and then there's probably attraction, and also the question of consistency. I guess one amazing performance is better than 10 average ones. And also, movies tend to center around men, and I have posted in the past things like "Movies Centered Around Women" and other similar ones, simply because I want something fresh, and noticed (along with music) they were centered around men. And then there's Hollywood where they would select actresses on looks. Remember, "Marty"? An independent movie, but still, back in 1954 it was possible for two "ugly" people to have a guy who looked like Ernest Borgnine, but the "dog" was Betsy Blair, who was very, very pretty. But they probably thought they'd lose a ton of money if they didn't have "eye candy".. There's a lot of ugly lead actors, Humphrey Bogart, etc.. Brando is the greatest and he's not handsome. But the women won't get this chance, and if they do, it's in a shitty movie, or a shitty role.

Gena Rowlands
Anna Magnani
Setsuko Hara
Sophia Loren
Kati Outinen

Margarete Tiesel is great in "Paradise: Love" but the movie is also great... To go off on another tangent, if you look at "Top Guitarists" (bassists, singers) I'm sure the songs are great. There are many great guitar player, but if you have a great writer like Roger Waters and Robert Lamm, you're going to get 10x more listeners, increasing the probability. There's only so many albums a company can push (they usually put 90% of their money on the top 1-3 bands) and as a result, there are a lot of great albums from the 70s that went ignored, not released, but are available thanks to YouTube.

I often use rating of actresses as a substitute for counting sheep. My only criteria is the actress must have appeared in at least 5 movies I really liked. I start with Myrna Loy, then Ginger Rogers and then usually sleep wins out.

I like dead women - no offense.

As a man, I find it hard to pick favourite actresses while actors is so easy. Is it sexist? Probably not. Gay? Maybe a little. I just think it’s a part of what « boys will be boys » means.

My picks:
Milla jovovic
Kristen Bell
Renée Zellweger
Gillian Jacobs
Joey Lauren Adams

HM: Scarlet Johansson, Charlize Theron, Juliette Lewis and Jennifer Connelly

I would say the opposite for me. It's easier to narrow down a list of favorite actresses whereas there seems like a lot more competition for great actors. If someone asks me for a top five actors I'll think of like 20 guys and not be able to narrow it down.

reply

No, you're right. It's definitely because you're 100% gay.

Just kidding. I know what you mean. I could come up with a list of actors I really like a lot easier than I can for actresses. Maybe we just relate to males easier. Who knows, maybe women find it easier to choose actresses over actors.

Rosalba Neri
Soledad Miranda
Edwige Fenech
Barbara Bouchet
Nieves Navarro

HelloSidney - I wish I could find that thread where we talked about these ladies recently. I could add something for Soledad Miranda and copy and paste the rest. 😊

I believe this is the thread:

I'm not familiar with Soledad Miranda but having googled her I see she passed away aged 27 after being in a car crash. :(

Are you familiar with Cristina Galbó? She's become one of my favorite euro-horror babes from the 70s/80s. She starred in;

- The House That Screamed (1969)
- What Have You Done to Solange? (1972)*
- Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974) , also known as, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (1974)

*She played Elizabeth the one having the affair with the teacher, she got killed in the bathtub.

The House That Screamed is decent. What Have You Done to Solange? is maybe my favourite giallo and The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue is one of my favourite zombie movies. Superb little trio of movies she starred in.

I definitely immediately recognized her but I have never known her name. I agree with you wholeheartedly about Solange, top tier giallo and my favorite of those three films you listed. I checked her out on LetterboxD and she was in a couple of other ones that are on my radar for future viewings so I will be on the look out.

“she passed away aged 27 after being in a car crash”

She was absolutely fantastic and had an amazing screen presence in Jess Franco’s films. He had really found his star in her and I always wonder what direction his films would have gone had she not died, although she may have been on to bigger things anyway. A couple of years after her death Franco found Lina Romay and the rest is history.

The man has a long and very interesting filmography, and the Soledad films are definitely a high point. My three favorites:

Vampyros Lesbos (1971)
Eugenie de Sade (1973)
She Killed in Ecstasy (1971)
