What is the most 80's movie?

I think it might be St. Elmo's Fire. It has aspiring upward yuppies, the fashion and feel of that decade. The 80's themselves were something that either you liked or didn't including the culture just like the film. I imagine most think it was bad, like the film.

What's your candidate?

When I think of 80's movies I naturally think of mullets so I will go with Road House.

I watched a video on that a couple of months ago on YouTube. It's by this guy, Patrick Willems.

Looking at stuff like fashion, music & politics of the era. And which movies best represents the 80s.

I believe Rocky 4 won..

So many great choices mentioned....I do think "St. Elmo's Fire" is an excellent choice. I'm like Shogun, though...I can't stand the movie 😃 (I don't think any of the main characters are likable....great soundtrack, though).

I was in school all throughout the 80s (started in elementary school, finished in college), so I really relate to the "school movies" of the 80s. Here are two I'll mention:

1) "The Breakfast Club" (1985) - just about everything about the 80s is encapsulated here, plus it's a John Hughes movie (and Hughes was just such a huge part of the 80's movie scene).

2) "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987) - I rewatched this movie earlier this year for the first time in years and it really took me back to that particular era. It's so cheesy and cringeworthy at times...but I think the story and message is mostly good. Something about that movie makes me long for waking up early on a bright & sunny early June morning.

Stallone movies and here's an interesting, ironic twist many are unaware of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEE1YzBJ7hg

The most 80s music video is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LatorN4P9aA

reply

Yeah, that really speaks the 80s but so does this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El1kgCqD7Xk Plus, notice the brief cameo appearances of Arsenio Hall who had a popular late night talk show during the late 80s.

The video is a super production compared to the one I posted, the fashion in 80s but the production could have been contemporary... nice song nevertheless

if you have in mind anything else from the era don't hesitate to post it

reply

Anything else? Ok, this also comes to mind as nostalgic 80s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izGwDsrQ1eQ

oh! It's not a bad song but it is way too trite... thanks for the input

How can something epitomize a decade and yet not be somewhat trite?

reply

Sure it is representative of the decade and consequently trite, not somewhat trite very trite. I was small kid at 80s and I didn't knew lots of good songs of the decade that I discovering now like the Straight Up you posted

reply

I always felt it was this one.

Corny and overdone are the superlatives of the decade. I think you hold the music of that era in higher esteem than the rest of us. Also that Journey song has probably been heard more than the rest of these put together.

I was small kid at 80s and I'm discovering the music of the period now with the internet.

Right on. It's fun stuff fer sure.

Too trite.

My close second choice behind Ferris😎

My gut first choice-

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

reply

Matthew Broderick recently admitted that he'll always be typecast as Ferris Bueller which is why he says he's never really been able to get decent roles and pretty much retired, but his Net worth is staggering..

"Matthew Broderick, the renowned American actor, has an impressive net worth of $220 million as of 2023. This is not just reflective of his solo efforts in the industry, but also combined with his equally illustrious wife, Sarah Jessica Parker.Sep 13, 2023"

Not bad for that movie pretty much making him like 40 Years ago

To be honest, I really can't think of off hand most of the films he's been in outside of Ferris, & War Games. Probably his last really good role was in Election, which was very un-"Ferris"-like to me.

Just thought of this one- 'Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo'
