Bands where replacement members served longer than "classic line up" members?

The first one that comes to mind is Motorhead, Campbell and Dee were with the band longer than Filthy Animal Taylor and Fast Eddie Clark.

Hugh McDonald has been in Bon Jovi longer than original bassist Alec John Such.

Ronnie Wood has been with the Stones longer than Brian Jones was.

Eagles: Founding members Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner left relatively early on.
The Allman Brothers Band: Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died early on.
Genesis: Phil Collins went on to front Genesis longer than Peter Gabriel.

BRIAN JOHNSON HAS BEEN SINGING FOR AC/DC FOR MORE YEARS THAN ORIGINAL SINGER BON SCOTT LIVED.

Weezer...bassist Matt Sharp was a big part of their success in their early years. However, he left the band in 1998 and Scott Shriner has played bass for them since then.

Also Lynyrd Skynyrd...too many to mention...such a sad history with this band.

Someone be a dear and do the math on David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar, will you?

If we're talking about the original time and not the brief reunions, it's about the same:
Diamond Dave: 1974-1985
The Red Rocker: 1985-1996

reply

A tie! I am mildly surprised.

Thanks, though.

reply

I thought of VH too but Lee Roth came back later on.

Brian Johnson has been with AC/DC for decades longer than Bon Scott was.

And both longer than original singer Dave Evans.

Yeah; that lineup wasn't even close to being a "classic lineup" though. They've had two lineups that I consider classic:

Bon Scott, Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd, and the one with all those same members except for Bon Scott replaced by Brian Johnson. The former is the Highway to Hell lineup (among others) and the latter is the Back in Black lineup (among others).

Speaking of Dave Evans, I talked to him on Yahoo Messenger about 16 years ago. His username was "daveevans_rocks" (lol).

reply

Yeah not part of the classic line up, I just threw it in for trivia. It must sting for Dave given how huge AC/DC became but then they may not have gone that far with him. Amazing he still hung in there and kept singing with other bands anyway.

Rush.

Only Lifeson is an original member. Jeffrey Jones was the bassist at the time of inception and was replaced in quick order by Geddy Lee. Rush then became a four piece in 1968 for a few months with the addition of Joe Perna. Lee was kicked out of the band at one point by a manger. After a bad gig with Perna they invited Lee back and Perna was out again.

John Rutsey was the original drummer from 1968-1973. He was replaced by Neil Peart 1974-2018.

Pink Floyd; Syd Barrett 1965-1968 replaced by David Gilmour 1967 to "present."

Alan Wilder stuck with Depeche Mode much longer than Vince Clarke.
