Official Media Purchases Thread 📼 📀 💽

It looks like Kowalski had a good recent haul so here’s what I’ve got so far this year.

Has anyone else made any good physical media purchases?

I just picked up Suspiria on blu-ray.

The cinematography and lightning in this movie is gorgeous!

reply

Old Suspiria or new Suspiria?

reply

“cinematography and lightning in this movie is gorgeous”

The man speaks of the 1977 masterpiece. 😀

reply

Gotta be, the original was beautifully shot, the remake was ok.

reply

Old Suspiria

reply

Today I picked up some used movies. I got:

Hellboy II blu ray
Evil Dead 2 dvd
The Girl Next Door dvd
The Lucy and Desi dvd collection
The Alice Faye dvd collection volume 2

reply

I went to the mall today and got:

Ghostbusters 1&2 blu ray
Beavis and Butthead Do America dvd
Meryl Streep 8 movie dvd collection
Comedy All-Star 16 movie dvd collection

reply

UM...YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE GHOSTBUSTERS YET?😐

reply

Surprisingly not. I had them on digital, but not on physical media.

reply

SOLID ADDITION THEN....BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD TOO...I LOVE THAT MOVIE...I SAW IT IN THE THEATER WITH MY COUSIN.

reply

Cool. I haven’t seen Beavis and Butthead before.

reply

My most recent purchases

Better Call Saul: Seasons 4-5
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
The Northman (2022)
The Witch (2015)

reply

So my finds this wet weekend were:
The Machinist
Romancing the Stone & The Jewel of the Nile
Sunshine on Leith
Mannequin
Jean De Florette & Manon Des Source
Genevieve
Rag Tale
Working Girl
Several old favourites to watch again - but at least I now have my own copies.

reply

Romancing the Stone never gets old. 👍

reply

Today I picked up:

Film Noir The Dark Side of Cinema volume 7 blu ray set
Heavy Metal blu ray
Elvis Presley 5 film dvd collection
Elvis Presley 7 film dvd collection

reply

I need to look up those film noir titles.

reply

Did you look into the film noir dark side of cinema sets yet?

reply

Yes I did but I’m not familiar with the titles. I’m much more interested in giallo but it’s a genre I hope to get around to at sometime.

reply

Today I picked up the Forgotten Gialli volumes 1 and 3 blu rays.

reply

“Forgotten Gialli” I need to look these up too!!

reply

Here's the info on the two I got:

https://vinegarsyndrome.com/products/forgotten-gialli-volume-three?_pos=1&_sid=0a6952687&_ss=r

reply

Trauma is the only one I’ve seen of those six titles. Let me know what you think of them.

reply

I watched Trauma today. My thoughts: not one of the best Giallo films, but enough style and sexy shenanigans to keep things interesting. It was a little predictable and the story could have been better, but I did enjoy the performances. 7/10 is my rating.

reply

I watched The Police Are Blundering in the Dark. It drags at times and isn't as entertaining as it should be. Still some nice moments. 6/10 is my rating.

reply

I watched The Killer Is One of 13 today. It didn't feel like a Giallo film and took a while to get warmed up. Once things started happening, it was pretty good and there was some stuff I enjoyed. I would rate the first hour a 6/10 and the last 35 minutes an 8/10, so my total rating for the film is a 7/10.

reply

I watched Autopsy today. Not as interesting as some other Giallo films, but not enough fun moments to make it worthwhile. 6/10.

reply

Thank you very much for the input on these. Although they sound like lesser entries, I’ll still give them a watch at some point. A low level giallo is still fun for the style and I love seeing the familiar faces that pop up in them.

reply

I watched The Murder Mansion today. This was pretty fun. It has a nice style and atmosphere and looks good. 7/10 is my rating.

reply

I’ll bump that one up on my list. I’ve been on a bit of a Hammer marathon lately. I’m finishing up Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell tonight.

reply

Sounds like fun. Let me know how it is.

reply

It was pretty good. I’m thinking an easy 7/10. From what I’ve seen most Hammer films are a fun watch and any that have Peter Cushing in the cast gets extra points. That man gives a great performance every time as far as I’m concerned. One that really stood out above the others for me was Twins of Evil. Those early 70’s Hammer productions had a touch of sleaze that I enjoy. 😀

reply

I'll have to check it out. Did you watch it on blu ray, dvd, streaming or somewhere else?

reply

It was on Movieland.tv but it unfortunately had some commercials.

reply

I watched Crazy Desires of a Murderer today. Some good moments, but not as compelling or as interesting as it could have been. 6/10, the weakest out of the movies in the two sets, but still worth checking out. My ranking of the 6 films in the two sets:

1. Trauma
2. The Murder Mansion
3. The Killer is one of 13
4. Autopsy
5. The Police Are Blundering in the Dark
6. Crazy Desires of a Murderer

reply

I’ll try to get to 2-6 at some point for sure, and in that order. 👍

reply

Today I went to The Beat Goes On and got some used movies. I got

Censor blu ray (although the discs inside were something called Smiley People, so I have to take it back and see if they have the right discs!)
Boys blu ray
Night Beast blu ray
Spartacus Criterion dvd edition (I already had the regular, non-Criterion blu ray, but I wanted to get the Criterion edition too)

reply

Gosh, it sucks when your excited about a purchase and you get it home and the wrong disc is inside. Lol

reply

Has that ever happened to you? This was the first time it happened to me.

reply

Many times in resale stores, and with vinyl records even more often than DVDs or VHS.

reply

What's the most you have ever paid for a single movie?

reply

50 BUCKS FOR THAT MONSTER DAWN OF THE DEAD BOXSET BACK IN THE DAY AT BEST BUY.

reply

Nice. I think the most I paid was 49.99 for special limited editions from Arrow or Criterion. There's an out of print Criterion dvd of Pandora's Box available at a store I like to go to that I'm considering, but it is 79.99, so I'm not sure I want to take the plunge.

reply

HONESTLY...I DON'T THINK I HAVE PAID MORE THAN FIVE DOLLARS FOR A TITLE IN AT LEAST 15 YEARS THOUGH...OCCASIONALLY I PAY UP FOR TV SHOWS THOUGH...I SPENT OVER A HUNDRED DOLLARS COMPLETING MY RED DWARF COLLECTION.

I DO REALLY WANT TO BE ONE OF THOSE BOUTIQUE COLLECTOR GUYS THOUGH....THE BLU RAYS ARE ALL SO SEXY AND COOL.

reply

Do you have any Arrow or Criterion releases?

reply

I OWN A DOZEN OR SO CRITERION DVDS...ZERO ARROWS.

reply

I paid 80.00 for The Woman in Black (1989) and something similar for a VHS copy for Return of the Living Dead (1985). Those two stand out in my memory. What about you?

reply

Currently, 49.99 is the most I have paid for new special editions of some Criterion or Arrow titles. Flash Gordon (Arrow), Dune (Arrow), and Show Boat (Criterion) are the ones I recall, although there may have been a few others. The used store I go to has Pandora's Box Criterion dvd, which is out of print, for 79.99. I'm considering maybe getting that.

reply

Now, it is Pandora's Box Criterion dvd (which is out of print), which I bought today for the low price of $79.99.

reply

It feels weird spending that much on movies, doesn’t it?

reply

I actually felt good spending that much.

reply

I was able to get the disc swapped out today with the correct one.
