What is your favorite movie about a historical figure?

Mine is Anne of the Thousand Days.

The first one that comes to my mind is Cleopatra (1963). I just love the cast and the major production it is.

hmmph...

my real answer is 'superstar: the karen carpenter story.'

but that's probably not what you meant by a historical figure....

so let's say... the passion of joan of arc. that's the only film on my top 100 that's based in history, i guess.

The first one that came to mind was The Buddy Holly Story but another voice in my head is pulling for The Right Stuff.

There are a few but Walk The Line and Patton are two stand outs

patton
spartacus
schinder's list
downfall
gandhi
barrabas

Downfall is a great choice.

Even though it's loaded with inaccuracies and conspiracy theories regarding the animosity between Salieri and Mozart (there was none), my favorite is Amadeus (1984). The costuming and scenery really give the viewer a feeling for the era.

reply

Not exactly that, but Gettysburg.

Lincoln (2012) was also a great film. For me, Daniel Day-Lewis totally captured Lincoln.

The Runaways (not sure how historical you want to get)
Amadeus
Immortal Beloved
Young Catherine (tv movie)
Nicholas and Alexandra
