reply

Top Secret!
The Naked Gun
Ace Ventura
Liar Liar
Torrente
Scary Movie 3
Borat
Hot Fuzz
Pineapple Express
Your Highness

But I'm probably missing a lot. I like dark humor, slapstick comedies, and awkward characters. Feel free to recommend some titles!

reply

Great list. If you’re looking for recommendations, look at all the other posters’ Top 10s - there’s some excellent picks.

reply

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World takes me back to my childhood, lol.

reply

I remember the scene where the guy kicks the bucket. lol

reply

In no particular order, because how do you decide that 1 laughgasm is better than another?

The Bank Dick
Some Like It Hot
To Die For
The War Of The Roses
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Into The Night (the cameos are priceless)
Princess Caraboo
Get Shorty
Ruthless People
My Cousin Vinny

reply

That's why I did mine chronologically (super list btw).

reply

Some Like It Hot! for one

reply

We need another 9 😉

reply

1) THe Naked Gun
20 The naked Gun sequel
3) The Naked Gun trilogy
4) A weekend at Bernies
5) A weekend at Bernies sequel
And just about every Laurel & Hardy movie there is lol. That should make 10.

reply

Laurel and Hardy have some absolutely classic and unforgettably funny scenes.

reply

Honesty's the best politics.

reply

I defy anyone to watch The Music Box (where they're pushing a piano up some steps) and not laugh.

reply

I know, I love it! That film was released back in 1932 I believe. Those steps are still there to this day, along with the garage or house at the very base and to the right of the steps. They are known as "THe Music Box Steps".

reply

Somewhere in Palm Springs I believe.

reply

In LA, they connect Vendom street with Sunset blvd I think.

reply

Yeah, I too found it too hard to do but here some of my tops:

Bio-Dome
Friday
Happy Gilmore
Multiplicity
Shaun of the dead
The meaning of life
Ace Ventura
Dead alive
What we do in the shadows
Idle hands

reply

There’s a few on there I’ll have to check out.

top ten comedy films for andyking's comedy extravaganza (part 1)

CC = classic comedy
GB = genre-bender (I might be the only one calling these movies comedies...)
CC/GB? = see i heart huckabees for more on what this designation means

a shot in the dark(1964) - CC
(if I hadn't started with this one, I would have included another peter sellers movie, either dr. strangelove or lolita)

midnight cowboy(1969) - GB
okay, i bet no one in 1969 and very few people in 2021 will agree with me that this is a comedy, but it still has some of the funniest lines i've ever heard, and my only criteria for if it is a comedy is did it make me laugh, and this movie did, a lot...

life of brian(1979) - CC
hard to choose which monty python to include, but i picked this one because i think i will laugh most on replaying this one... on first watch, i probably would have picked one of the other two, but which one? I really don't know! Time Bandits gets honorable mention as well...

adventures of buckaroo bonzai across the eighth dimension(1984) - CC
i hated this movie the first time i saw it... i must have had an inadequately developed sense of humor at the time... i think i still feel in some neglected corner of my brain that this movie must be objectively terrible... but who cares when you are laughing that hard?

glengarry glen ross(1992) - GB
trust me, it's as much comedy as drama... what do you mean imdb doesn't agree? who cares what bezos's mouthpiece says? they aren't the boss of me! wait, now i can't have any coffee? who says?

reply

It's your list - you can include whatever you want.

top ten comedy films for andyking's comedy extravaganza (part 2)

CC = classic comedy
GB = genre-bender (I might be the only one calling these movies comedies...)
CC/GB? = see i heart huckabees for more on what this designation means

fargo(5 April 1996) - GB
there's a solid chunk of five or six coen brothers movies i could have put here... i almost put miller's crossing... don't agree? please see midnight cowboy regarding my criteria. Anyway, it's a GB, so that gives me free reign. Free rain? Aw, what the Christ!

flirting with disaster(12 april 1996) - CC
just rewatched this, and it really is just one punchline after another... sexy in such a strange way too... it could be a GB, but not a GB as defined in this article. a much sexier GB.

adaptation(2002) - CC/GB? (see i heart huckabees for interpretation)
what can i say? nicolas cage is a comedic hero of mine. See Vampire's Kiss if you don't believe. Paired with Charlie Kaufman, it's like a fine wine, and some guy who doesn't know anything about wine trying to decide which one is the poisoned glass.

i heart huckabees(2004) - CC/GB? (does this movie have a genre?)
lily tomlin and dustin hoffman
naomi watts and jude law
isabelle huppert, mark wahlberg, and jason schwartzman
i just don't know which pair i like best!

reply

Great list and thanks for taking the time to explain the choices.
