Best song, worst song

Name your favourite song by your favourite band/artist and one track by them you absolutely dislike.

I’ll start with Duran Duran:

Best: Come Undone https://youtu.be/Epj84QVw2rc
It’s been covered numerous times over the years and I own most of them. The lyrics to this song were a birthday present from Simon Le Bon to his wife Yasmin. I like this so much I know all the words!

Worst: My Own Way https://youtu.be/QUrIDz6L5vc
After the success of Girls on Film, management rushed out this horrendous disco version whilst the band were working on the Rio album, it failed to make the top ten and the band rerecorded it for the album without the disco, DD seem to dislike it too, this song never appears on Greatest Hits albums and is rarely played live, unlike their other singles.

I don't really have favourite songs. I am too indecisive.

A Depeche mode song I really like. It's not as well known as other songs on Violator, but it's probably my favourite off that album
Blue Dress https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb1isFy1wlw

They have a few I really don't like but I think this one takes the cake. They've had some self indulgent songs over the years, and just some that are crap, but this one is just so annoying.
What's your name https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7QDMCqdDXo

reply

I love Blue Dress too, I was never much of a fan of Vince Clarke (or his later bands), so I'd probally go with that song as well.

reply

I do like some Erasure songs, but I'm not a huge fan of Clarke either.

reply

Blue Dress is a great song. My favorite from that album is Halo. (I also like the "big hits" Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence.)

I think Violator is just one of those rare records that inspire a number of different favorites.

The Beatles

Best: A Day in the Life. https://youtu.be/usNsCeOV4GM
What is there to say really? This song is flawless.

Worst: Penny Lane. https://youtu.be/S-rB0pHI9fU
There are probably a few more obvious contenders like Wild Honey Pie or Revolution 9, but as far as a "regular" Beatles song goes, I find no other Beatles song to be more meaningless and saccharine than Penny Lane.

reply

A Day in the Life would be a top 3 song for me most definitely, there’s a lot of tosh on the White Album but also some of my favourites too with Blackbird standing out as a fave for me.

Let It Be is my fave single of theirs, whilst I never much liked The Ballad of John and Yoko so I’d pick that as my least fave Beatles single.

reply

I forgot about the Ballad of John and Yoko! I may dislike that more than Penny Lane.

reply

I know, it's just about John moaning! It would have been better as a solo single, I believe only he and Paul played on it anyway, Yoko probably looked on.

reply

A Day in the Life is the best. The worst is Blue Jay Way

reply

I like the weather report in that.

reply

I love Blue Jay Way. It eerie. It's like the soundtrack to the horror film that was late 60s LA.

reply

What's your favourite Beatles album? I am partial to Revolver and Sgt. Pep.

reply

Sgt Pepper and Rubber Soul

reply

Funny, I used the British spelling of favorite when talking about the Beatles. That's weird considering I do not live in the UK.

reply

Same. 👍

reply

The Eagles

Best..I can't tell you why https://youtu.be/jTejseilE-Y

Worst..Take it to the limit https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xXWfnf1tQog

reply

That's not an Eagles song. It's a Joe Walsh solo effort.

reply

Ahhh you're right..

reply

No it isn’t. They are both Eagles songs.

Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Randy Meisner wrote “Take It To The Limit”.

Frey, Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit wrote “I Can’t Tell You Why”.

Both on Eagles albums. Take It To The Limit is an amazing song too by the way. Haha.

reply

It was edited. It first said "Life's Been Good". That why tcrum replied that I was right.

reply

Oh, ok. I apologize.

reply

Neil Diamond.

Best: I Am I Said https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxDyXK93o6g&ab_channel=VickiSmith

Worst: Heart Light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgdjK4RXpQw&ab_channel=darney1971

reply

For me both are pretty awful. Sample lyrics for I Am I Said:

"I am"... I said
To no one there
And no one heard at all
Not even the chair.

Wut?!

I picture him tearing his hair out trying to find some meaningful word that rhymes with 'there'.
Bear? Why would I be talking to a bear?
Mare? Christ, that's a horse! What's with the animals?
Hare? Again with the f**king animals?
Pear? I'm taking to fruit now? At least it's not a goddam animal...
*slaps his own forehead*
Think Neil, think!

reply

what is your favorite?

reply

I was never a big Neil Diamond fan.

Sweet Caroline, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show, Cracklin' Rosie, Holly Holy.

Not because are particularly good songs... but they are great karaoke songs and I like to karaoke.

reply

Not my favorite band but certainly in my top 5.

Steely Dan:

Best: Any World (That I'm Welcome To) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDWV-570oXo
It's just a great song that hit my fancy early on in my Steely Dan voyage. The piano pacing is amazingly fantastic to me, Don is at the top of his vocal game and the lyrics really hit home. I can't imagine the thought process that went into making a song this perfect.

Worst: Peg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hGmqpQ_vkA
Don't mind me if you're picking your jaw up off the floor. I just hate it. I know... I know... "AjA iS tHe PeRfEcT aLbUm." Save it for someone who really cares. The musicianship on it is mostly fine. The horns could have been toned down a bit. The production is just too polished. Jay Graydon's solo is lifeless. And I hate (I do mean HATE) Michael McDonald's backing vocals with an absolute passion. I can understand why so many people hate Yacht Rock when I listen to this abomination of a track. Again, fuck Michael McDonald. Straight up. The only Steely song I skip when listening to the catalog.

reply

Did I mention that Michael McDonald can go blow a donkey? I just wanted to put it out there.

reply

Maybe this version is more your speed.

reply

SMDH. The psychological damage is far too deep at this point. I can't do it.

In all fairness, even considering it's Donny Osmond.... it's not that much worse than the Steely offering. That's just how bad of a song it is.

reply

> Worst: Peg

You're not the only one. Back in the day, my friends and I called it "Pig."

reply

Grateful Dead

Favorite - Terrapin Station https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V3Q7P8h5V4

Worst - Blues for Allah/Sand Castles & Glass Camels/Unusual Occurrences in the Desert (it's all one track)

reply

the fall are exactly what i want music to sound like. there are about 3 dozen songs that are cranky, miserable, ugly, repetitive perfection, but my favourite is new puritan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfYwnsMjPEs&ab_channel=SeagreenSerenade

worst? eh..., they certainly had some poor stuff (not much though), but my least favourite would have to come from the period where they got a bit too smooth and bland in the early 90s.

the title track to shiftwork is a good example.

reply

There are so many songs that I could name as Stone Temple Pilots' best. I'm gonna cheat and name two; one that is probably their most popular:

Interstate Love Song https://youtu.be/yjJL9DGU7Gg?t=36

and one that is probably less well-known (a Bowie homage from their last record):

First Kiss on Mars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp9dR7BvuIs

Their worst:

Pretty Penny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWj73gYZDUk

reply

I'd vote for Sex Type Thing. That song was so original.
