Self tooth extraction

If you somehow had to extract a tooth yourself, what would you use? I used clothes pins...seriously lol. And it worked rather well. They were baby teeth though I should add. And I was an adult then. Somehow I managed to retain two of my baby teeth well into my adult years. And they were becoming problematic, and my employer at the time was pathetic, and I had no health benefits. Who says it's hard to be a dentist? Just kidding to all the dentist's out there, your amazing professional's who can save us lots of suffering.

Lol, the only way Tom Hanks could pull that off somewhat safely I'm sure, is if the tooth was already quite loose. If it wasn't you would likely fracture the tooth, without removing much of it. Then you would be in for a whole lot more trouble. And I'm sure a tooth never gets pulled by a dentist. That's more of a figure of speech. They firmly sort of wiggle it by applying pressure from side to side and eventually if done right, should pretty much dislodge on it's own.

reply

Yes, you are right about it already being loose.

Besides my wisdom teeth, I've had one tooth extraction, several years ago (and got an implant as a replacement, a costly thing, but totally worth it). Extraction is definitely "don't try this at home."

That is why we have public dental care in Sweden.
Everybody can go to a dentist without having to worry about whether or not their employer will pay for it.
And if you're a minor, you will get your dental care for free.
And if you're an adult but disabled, you will get parts of your dental care paid by your municipality.
Thus, I would never extract one of my own teeth! Ugh!

For me, it wasn't as bad as I thought it could be, (pain wise). I actually used one half of a clothes pin to apply periodic pressure on the tooth. It was slightly painful for a while. After a few days I started to notice it loosen, little by little. And after a while, I think the nerve in the tooth dies. Then it's not as painful, just more so in the gum area. Then, eventually, it just sorta popped out.

Still, ugh...

I'm in the USA. I worked with a Swede once, around 1990. He was telling me about the health care system there. I said something like "must be nice." He said, "it is, if you don't mind paying 65% of your income as taxes." I never knew if that number was accurate or was an exaggeration.

reply

You have to pay around a third of your income, plus a bit more if you make enough money.
You have to pay a tax on what you buy in stores and restaurants too (I don't believe that you do that in the US).
However, I doubt that this will be as much as 65 %.
But I know that some Swedes would prefer a society with lower taxes, so I guess that they would exaggerate.
Really though, I believe that paying taxes and helping each other out is the best way.
As I'm on a disability pension (and I also pay taxes anyway), it is alien to me to support another system.

I used paper towels, painkillers, and some patience.

Teeth are deep. When I get them professionally taken out. This guy pulls with all his might, sometimes crushing the tooth in the process, sometimes it pops out in 1 piece.

Those were wisdoms though

What ever you could use to get a good firm grip on that sucker. Small pair of vice grips.

I actually did that as a kid, starting at age 5, when my baby teeth were coming out. It's a very simple process: just wiggle the loosened tooth until it gets really loose, and eventually it'll come out on its own. There was one case when I was 6, and I accidentally swallowed one of my front baby teeth, but didn't know it until I came home and saw the missing tooth in front. All the rest, I made a point to get them out and give them to the Tooth Fairy xD. There was one tooth that just would not come out, and I wanted it out real bad, and mom warned me that if we had the dentist do it, the Tooth Fairy wouldn't come. I must have wanted it out real bad to forego rewards from the Tooth Fairy. I think my last teeth to come out were the back molars, when I was 9/10 years old.

P.S. I don't actually believe in the Tooth Fairy, it was just a cute myth my brother and I believed as kids....until we tried setting traps for her, lol.
