I work with a young man who has a severe intellectual disability. He's very functional, if a bit undersized.
The irony is, were he in school, I wouldn't be getting as many hours as I have been. And being in school is more stressful for him, although he may benefit from that challenge, hard to say.
But for me personally, I've really been invigorated by attending his virtual school and trying to educate him with his homework, finding the right balance of pushing him a little and not just giving him the right answers or watching all sorts of deflating and behavior-creating tries at things he has terrible difficulty with.
My own life is much more lively by having to wrestle with his education, limited as it is.
And I wouldn't have this without him Not being in school.
Doesn't make me happy about the big picture but I'm gratified I've been able to work hard to help this kid as best I can.
