Should the Menendez brothers be freed?

24 years behind bars. In Australia, unless you pose a risk for repeat offending (like a serial killer or serial rapist), you won't do more than 20 years.

Yet these two will never be released. No possibility of parole. Both are married. Both are in their 50s now.

Shouldn't there be a day where they stop being punished for something they did 30 years ago?

reply

They won't be released. Their case is too politicized for them to be released. Look at the Manson killers. They're still locked up and they committed their crimes in 1969! Hell, even Susan Atkins had brain cancer and asked for "compassionate release" but they still denied her and then she died. Another Manson follower, Leslie Van Houten, was granted parole 4 times but was ultimately vetoed by the California governor.

So, the message here is, the more notorious your crimes are, the less likely you will be released.

reply

One of the Manson killers was released. Steve "Clem" Grogan was the only family member who got released on parole, in 1985. He drew a map for authorities to find Donald "Shorty" Shea's body. He was a real stuntman at the ranch where the Manson family stayed. Clem had hit Shea in the head with a pipe wrench. But Clem later said in prison that Charles “Tex” Watson actually murdered Shea, and that Manson was not even there.

reply

Nobody knows who "Clem" is. He wasn't involved with the infamous Tate-Labianca killings.

reply

Hell no. They committed premeditated murder against their own parents, who will never get to enjoy life again. Maybe release them on compassionate grounds when they're elderly so the taxpayers don't have to pay for their medical costs.

reply

No doubt what they did was terrible.

But should they still be there in their 80s?

reply

As I said, release them when they are feeble, old men, but I don't think they should be released after only 24 years.

reply

Releasing them now would pose so much risk. After having been in jail for 24 years, what can they do outside? Nobody would want them near anyone. No job, no place to live.

Normal people would probably kill themselves at this point, but they're clearly not regular people. When they're stressed too much they may start killing people randomly.

reply

No. They schemed to kill their own parents for money. If they would kill their own parents, nobody is safe from them.
When they are victims stop being dead for something that was done 30 years ago, then they might have a case to ask for leniency for what they did 30 years ago.

reply

Do you feel the same about the Manson killers?

reply

Do you mean the Charles Manson and the “Manson family”. Absolutely. They are completely insane. The Menendez’s would kill for money of profit. The Mansons killed for no reason at all.
