Dubbing or closed captioning

Are you less likely to enjoy a highly recommended film with either dubbing or closed captioning ? There are some Chinese/other Asian movies I tried but the dubbing was intolerable!

I prefer subs but I watch dubbed films all the time and it usually does not bother me.

for live action films, i find dubs unwatchable tbh. unless it's a silly slasher or a giallo where the dubbing comes with the way the film was produced, i always avoid them.

i think they're fine for animated films, though. generally the mouth movements are vague enough that there's little or no missmatch between what you see and what you hear. i recently went through a few of the ghibli films, and found the dubs to be mostly fine, perhaps just as enjoyable as the subbed version.

Except in the case of animated movies, dubbing is always intolerable.

Yes, but you will hardly find dubbed movies here in Sweden anyway unless kids are the target audience.
Even cartoons will get subtitles if they are more for adults, like for example "The Simpsons" or "South Park".

When I was a kid there were no movies dubbed for kids except animated movies. Nowadays even kids' tv shows get dubbed.😖

99% Subtitles.

There have been one or two movies that I've watched where the actor did their own dubbing and it wasn't bad.

My partner hates subtitles so he only watches dubbed, I can't really stand it and have to be doing something else or it drives me nutty.

I would prefer subtitles. I find whoever they get to do the over dubs always sound like bored students reading from a book. No personality or emotion at all. You would think they would hire voice actors.

I think the best dubbing job I've encountered is Das Boot. I prefer subtitles, to get that real flavor, but some of the actors dubbed their own voices and it is pretty well done.
