Do you like Michael Jackson's 'belting' vocal?

Belting is a style of singing that is basically yelling in key.

The acapella for '2bad' really show cases this style.

You don't hear any songs on the radio with belting anymore, instead we get autotuned rappers who sort of sing-talk.

reply

Not my favorite style of music but MJ sure sounded good there👍

reply

Yeah, he has a lot of soul. Sadly the track is very overproduced so you don’t really appreciate his vocals. He layered too many sounds on most tracks.

reply

fit the song. It was good there.

Ethel Merman was huge in her day, but I never liked her style because I thought she was yelling (belting?) rather than singing.

I always thought he was over rated, even before child sex allegations.

reply

I think as time passes, we realise how talented he actually was compared to what we've got now.

He was a song and dance man and we don't really have that anymore.

There's Usher and Chris Brown who do some dancing as they perform but that's about it.

reply

Music in general was way better back then and he wasn't without talent just not as great as he was made out to be either. But that could be said of a lot of major stars too.

A lot of the song and dance men/women now tend to lip synch as well which is pretty average given what they get paid.

reply

Michael's talent declined in the 90s in terms of live performances. He lip synced.

But his hey-day of the Bad Tour in 1988, he was a legend.

reply

That has nothing to do with talent. Thirty years of performing and recording had injured his vocal cords, so he could no longer sing for two hours straight and had to cheat.

And I actually prefer the History Tour over the Bad Tour and the Dangerous Tour.

reply

I like all in their own ways but the lip syncing gets annoying.

reply

It was either that or no tour at all by that point.

reply

Or not dance. He had reduced lung capacity due to scarring on his lungs. The autopsy revealed that.

reply

I did know that he had a burst blood vessel in a lung at some point when he was young. But I had no idea about his lungs being scarred more than twenty years later. Poor guy...
Perhaps his problem in the '90s was more with his lungs than with his vocal cords then.
But I guess that not dancing never was an option either. So we had to take what we got.

reply

No, no, no!

He was never overrated and never did anything wrong to any child ever!

He had issues with children. But it was more about the need to recover someway his own childhood. It wasn't anything sexual.

reply

i guess you were there.

reply

Never was a fan of screeching. And there is a big difference between being a screecher and a belter.

reply

He was a genius. He created his own style, different from everybody else.

That said, it's a style that can get repetitive and boring very quickly. I wouldn't like to see that kind of singing becoming popular.
