Is there any movie with an old man looking back at his life?

Not looking for a sci-fi movie like curious case lf Benjamin Button or Mr. Nobody.
I am talking about something more real. Like an old man passing on wisdom or just looking back at his life. Remembering his youth. The moments.

Note: I usually don't watch movies that are too old. Say prior to mid 80s.

Amadeus (1984)

*Old women looking back films:
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)
Titanic (1997)

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) seems promising. I don't know why but, looking at the trailer, the movie looks older than it is.

It is set in two time periods. The old lady is in present day 1990s and she is looking back at her youth in the 1920s-30s.

reply

I get that. But the picture quality (judging from the trailer) etc looks like that of a movie from early 80s.

Big fish from Tim Burton is from 2001 and has a similar story where an old man is telling about his life but it is more fantastical and whimsical in nature. It's a good movie though. Someone already mentioned the wild strawberries from Bergman but it's an older movie and you said you don't like those.

reply

Um Idk. I mean I just saw the trailer.. giant man, moving trees. I am more into realistic movies. Ones that you could relate to.

Capone

Probably not he movie I am looking for at the moment. But given the fact that it has Tom Hardy, I want to watch it anyways.
I don't think it has been released yet. Also the IMDB rating is really low, I wonder why.

American Beauty

I haven't watched that movie. I am looking for a movie that could perhaps help you gain some wisdom. You know like a man looking back at his life. A movie depicting what are the things that matter and those that don't.

IMDB summary: "A sexually frustrated suburban father has a mid-life crisis after becoming infatuated with his daughter's best friend."

I don't know if this would fit?

reply

The entire movie was him looking back at his life just before his death.

You’re missing out on a lot then. Jesus Christ.

You are right. But old movies just don't appeal to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You mean you don’t like Star Wars? Jaws? Alien???

Fences ?

reply

Fences is good. If you like talky talky movie. But it's a good talky talky movie. Denzel was incredible.

reply

I thought it was ok, but sooo slow and so long and so much talking .

reply

I liked it a lot. Yeah, I don't want to rewatch it, but it was an experience. Lots of talking doesn't bother me if the performance was good and the cinematography wasn't distracting.

Sometimes, directors, knowing that the movie has a lot of talking they might add some unnecessary & unrealistic camera movements (The Post, I can't believe it was Spielberg! I think he's just too out of touch nowadays) or other gimmicks like extreme close ups (Jackie, ugh.. what was the purpose of so many super tight close up shots?)

Fences was filmed straight up and no pretentious gimmicks. That makes it move very slow and boring. But I prefer talky talky movies to be slow and boring than be forced to add excitement! And thrill! And more! I'd watch thrillers or action movies if I want to be thrilled and excited.

Other good talky talky movies that I like... the Before trilogy, The Sunset Limited, Locke, My Dinner with Andre, the recent Netflix movie The Two Popes, etc.
