Whenever I can, I will try. RRSP's in Canada are good. I prefer keeping my $ in liquid accounts, meaning you can take from it if needed. But if you can lock the $ away, it generally can accumulate more interest over time. And in Canada at least with RRSP's I've learned is that it can make a huge difference as to what you get back in the way of a tax return the following year.

5% of my pay automatically goes into my company's stock option plan (this is separate from my 401k and consists of after tax dollars that I can withdraw at any time). Boy did it take a bath over the past few months! Fortunately I had withdrawn a little over $6,000 in January to buy a car which was a little over a month before Covid hit and cut the rest of it in half (I withdrew when it was at $21 a share and it fell all the way to $8 at one point. Bounced back a bit to between $11-$12 where it is now). The bright side is that what's coming out of my paycheck now is being invested at the much lower price so eventually when it recovers there will be more gains to be made on that new money. Knock on wood I don't lose my job any time soon and I'm around to reap the benefits of course.

The timeless strategy of dollar cost averaging

Lol somewhat but it's less a strategy and more simply a savings plan for me. If there was any active strategizing required on my part I probably wouldn't have the stones for it. My company has been around a very long time so the idea that they may go under rendering the stock worthless really isn't a concern plus they match 25% of my contributions so investing in it was a no brainer for me.
