recommend some books

i should be finishing the book i'm currently reading tomorrow afternoon. i'm considering re-reading barbara demick's 'nothing to envy - ordinary lives in north korea,' but i'm not sure i feel like taking on something that dour, particularly since the book i'm finishing, while good & enjoyable, was a bit of a grind to get through.

so throw up some book recommendations. maybe we'll all find something to enjoy.

& if you feel ambitious, you can recommend something for each of the following categories:

1. scientific nonfiction (e.g. "the selfish gene")
2. biography/autobiography
3. modern fiction (e.g. "atonement")
4. sci-fi

looks good. they have a physical copy in our library, but nothing digital unfortunately. i've added it to my goodreads profile, but i probably won't get to it until our library re-opens.

reply

it would make a good movie.

The Vanishing - Tim Krabbé

The Disaster Artist - Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell.

interesting. i had no idea the vanishing was based on a novel. i'm a big fan of the film, less so the remake of course. i am definitely down for reading this. we have it in our library, again only hard copies, nothing digital, so i'll have to wait until we're re-opened to get it. looks like it was published under the name 'the vanishing' here.

this is a very good recommendation. thanks!

i listened to the audio-book of the disaster artist a few years back & enjoyed it a lot. it was read by greg sesteros - he does a perfect, spot-on tommy impersonation. better than franco's imo.

reply

Stupid Wikipedia first tells me it's called The Golden Egg, then mentions it was published as The Vanishing.🙄

I pretty much hated every book I had to read in school except this one and Of Mice and Men.

Lol, maybe I should go and find that audio book!😆

Have you read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern?

If you like Sci Fi I also recommend the first 5 or 6 books of the Game is Life series by Terry Schott.

reply

don't know either of those - i generally never read fiction, but since everything's so dour these days, i've taken to reading a bit of sci-fi to help escape from the misery of daily life. i'll look into them, thanks - though i'm not sure if i'm up for taking on anything that's part of a series.

reply

just finished catch 22, i highly recommend reading the classics.

i actually have a copy of that kicking around here. i picked it up at a used book fair years ago & threw it in my 'someday' pile. maybe i'll give it a go.

My favorite book is one called The Little Prince, Antoine de St. Exupery. It has only 111 pages. My favorite quote from the book is "It is with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye". I love it!

How very dare you - that's my favourite book! I kid, we're not an exclusive bunch.

LOL!
