I've noticed that when numbering a list some people will use a number followed by a period, such as 2., while others will use a number followed by a parenthesis, such as 2)...Now I have no preference of one over the other but my OCD flares up terribly when there's a Baker's Dozen list that has a mix of the two. For example, you may see a list numbered such as:
1.
2.
3)
4.
5)
6)
7.
Whenever I'm adding I always find myself and going and changing whichever has the least entries to match the format of the others. Has anyone else noticed this and am I the only one who gets troubled by it?
I hear what you're saying, Sam.
And I guess I'm guilty as charged when it comes to using a period instead of the end parenthesis when I post a reply on a Baker's Dozen thread.
However, I do use the end parenthesis whenever I post the track list of one of my compilation cds.
In fact, I take it one step further ...
I must confess that it bothers me that when I post, the numbers from tracks 10 to the end don't line up perfectly with numbers one to nine.
Thus to redeem that situation, I do the following (here's the track list of a recent cd I burned as an example) ... THE RIVER
. 1) Bruce Springsteen - The River (live - 2001)
. 2) Van Morrison - Magic Time
. 3) The Rolling Stones - Time Waits For No One
. 4) Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
. 5) Mark Knopfler & James Taylor - Sailing to Philadelphia
. 6) Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad (live - 2006)
. 7) Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Against the Wind
. 8) Jackson Browne - The Barricades of Heaven
. 9) Neil Young - Powderfinger
10) The Band - Acadian Driftwood
11) Van Morrison - Celtic New Year
12) Bruce Springsteen - New York City Serenade
Now all the numbers, parenthesis and artists line up perfectly.
Interesting...I can see how the spacing being off would bother you. Like I said I don't even have a preference between period and parethesis, it just eats away at me when it switches throughout the list. I feel like whichever choice the OP starts with, the rest of us should follow suit.
Your post also reminds me that I miss the days of burning CDs. I don't have a laptop/PC with a burner anymore but years ago my friend and I use to each make a mix CD for each other for Christmas and it was always fun seeing what songs we chose for each other (pretty sure if not for me she'd have never heard a song by the Insane Clown Posse).
