Do you count superhero movies as real movies?

I’m a huge fan of superhero films and I respect very much blockbusters in general.

But you know guys I think when Martin Scorsese made his comments on superhero films he opened a great topic debate and sadly everyone focused on why said it and if it’s offensive etc. Instead of defending their points on the other side of the debate so I’d like to open his debate again.

Personally I disagree with what Martín said and here is why...

I think blockbusters in general let us get closer with our inner child and for a few hours suspend our disbelief, blockbusters make families come together with films that we all can enjoy no matter how old we are.

Many films of the MCU touch good topics to discuss with teenagers like how not everything in war is black and white.

Civil War is about the The importance of limiting power and in some way the importance to follow the law because it does exist for a reason.

Sure we all know governments are not perfect and like Steve said have agendas but Tony’s point was pretty fair too if we don’t follow limits then they aren’t really exactly better than the bad guys.

This is something really good for kids to learn and discuss. Maybe not little kids but let’s say kids between 12-16.

The Avengers movies well as cheesy as it sounds talk about learning to walk as team and putting differences aside to work as that a team.

Harry Potter is about friendship and tolerance.

So he is wrong on superhero films not making people think or provoking debates or discussions.

The stories might be simple but there is a hard work on characters in good blockbusters we see characters arcs and they go slow like watching a tv series but doing it on the big screen.

We see when a blockbuster works when fans connect with the characters and choose favorites.

Maybe sometimes the stories are simpler but if the fans connect with the characters it means the film did a good job on creating emotional responses from the audience.

That’s my defense for superhero films and why I disagree with Scorsese. Again I don’t think he is jealous or anything but I just don’t think like he does.

Now he did something right about needing diversity in movie theaters. Definitely studios should green light more diversity in film genres.

I do think that 80% of film theaters are occupied by big blockbusters and fantasy or sci fy but I do like superhero films a lot and I don’t think of them as theme parks.

Of course they’re real movies, all movies are “real” movies. It doesn’t mean that most of them aren’t soulless popcorn flicks.

Scorsese never said they weren’t movies, he’s just frustrated that that’s all that’s available and consequently how difficult it has made it for genuinely good movies to get made, and he’s right.

He literally had to go to Netflix w his tail between his legs to get his movie made, a director with his industry clout and acclaim was turned down by every major studio.

I consider them real movies but I don't consider the overwhelming majority of them to be great movies.

reply

They're vapid movies, bereft of any real content. And I feel like I have a license to say that because I collect comic books and enjoy them.

reply

I think they're real movies but I understand exactly what Scorsese is trying to convey.

Intentionally or not, his first choice of words was not the best.

reply

There are Superhero movies that are some of the best movies I've ever seen.

reply

No. They are like science fiction. That doesn't mean people can't enjoy them.

reply

But good science fiction it’s a good movie.

I might not like horror but a good horror film is as valuable as a Drama.
The academy in some way has made people think only dramas are real good movies but we shouldn’t undervalue films because of their genre. It’s something that has happened a lot recently.

reply

I think what you are asking is should superhero movies be considered for the Academy Awards.

reply

Not exactly but hey that’s another good topic to talk about and not only superheroes but maybe the academy should consider other genres than drama more often.

With a few exceptions I feel like the academy is a bit close minded to not nominate films because of their genre.

I hate horror movies but I think IT could have been considered for how good it was in its genre, in 1998 My Best Friends wedding I think it was good enough for a best nomination and Julia Roberts for best actress.

Of course that’s a whole different than the one I’m covering right now but that is something I’ve been thinking about a lot.

Superhero stories are the same as religious stories.

They are allegories about life.

They are literally meant to be too.

The X-Men is about diversity and how weird people have value. Also, it's an allegory for stopping the holocaust.

Hulk was made to teach angry people the consequences of being angry all the time.

Superman is about being an unusual person who is great inside but doesn't go around pushing it in people's faces.

Batman is about getting your life ruined by trauma but then doing something positive even if it's not leading a normal life.

The idea of "art" is that it's art if it moves you. I love helping people and all of the comics and movies about the above characters has made me cry, be joyful when I see people act like superheroes, and so forth. I'm a psychotherapist and use comics as examples all the time.

In the summer I was working with an orphan no one wanted. He was a young black kid who was totally abandoned by his family. Like a superhero, he told me he decided to change his ways and stop being angry at everyone. He didn't want to hurt people because he was hurt. I told him he sounded like a superhero. He told me that his favorite character was Shazam! I was knocked over because Shazam was an orphan!!

He liked that and I went and used my own money to buy him a bunch of comics.

Find me a Scorsese movie that does all of THAT SHIT because you can't.

His movies are the glorification of perverted criminals that he makes seem cheerful, funny, and clever. They are crime porn and garbage.

reply

It’s so true everything you said how these stories are real allegories to life.
In some way I think the conflict of Civil war is a mixture of many important debates.

First arms control and if they can be used on the wrong way and it also talks about wars are not always evil Vs good people and things are not always black and white.

Definitely also agree on if a movie, painting or song has an effect on you then it can be considered art.

I don’t think Scorsese is overrated, mafia films are not totally my type but has some nice films outside of that sub genre like The Age of Innocence with Michelle Pfieffer, Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder.

Civil War was written after 911 when Bush Jr. was doing the "Homeland Security" thing with phone, email, etc surveillance. That's because terrorists were using technology to communicate. So, they had to use whatever resources necessary to detect them.

That was even in Dark Knight where he uses phone technology to listen to everyone to find people. The NSA does that fo real.

Anyway, at that time the media had a big propaganda campaign against Bush. It was all about "giving up freedom for security" so Avengers was trying to be timely.

In reality, the people who run the media were probably scared shitless that the government would hear their drug deals, and pedo activities, through this system. But, the gov doesn't care about that and needed to find terrorists using the western infrastructure to achieve their goals.

That's what Civil War was about the freedom vs security debate.

reply

Mmm and thought it was gun control and freedom with responsibility. Or basically about having limits.

The film talked a About how the government can be shady and not really moral but that doesn’t mean the law it’s always to be broken or there shouldn’t be limits.

But you are the one who clearly knows better. My knowledge on Civil war is the film yours is much more extensive because it goes more into the comic series Civil War.

Yeah, they're real, but most of them are not very good.
