Best Live Record (Rock N Roll)

What do you think is the best live rock and roll album ever recorded?
I'm going with these three are my favorites.

There are hundreds of great live recordings that are out there but these are my three fav.

Deep Purple - Made in Japan
The Almond Brothers band - Live at Filmore East
Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More from the Road - recorded at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia (1976)

The Song Remains the Same by Led Zeppelin

The Who - Live At Leeds

^This. Not for nothing, the audio quality of the recording is clear and has huge dynamic range. That’s just a bonus, but it IS a reference record for audiophiles, as is Quadraphonia. More important, NOBODY in concert had as much raw energy and fury as The Who. Not Hendrix, Stones, Queen, Zep. ^This. ^This is the right answer.

And The Who always said, “We’re a live band.”

I was lucky enough to see them about 25 years ago when John Entwistle was still alive.

Great album - Is that the concert where Keith Moon broke apart his drum set?

reply

Didn’t he do that at every gig, lol?

reply

Definitely this. They killed it

One of the best live bands ever.

There are many amazing bootlegs out there too.

Generally not a big fan of live albums. Most of the time the studio versions are better. For some reason, though, I like Hendrix's live stuff more than the studio albums. He just sounded looser, more uninhibited or something, I don't know.

So I will go with Jimi Hendrix Live at the Fillmore East.

You want live Hendrix, you want Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival, by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

reply

Thanks, I'll look for that one.

Always a pleasure to refer friends to wonderful music. Can you believe that Jimi’s career spanned only 3 years?! If you find the album Monterey Pop, buy it. On the LP, 1 side is Otis Redding, the other side is Jimi. It was his birth as a star. As the liner notes on the LP said, “When he walked on the stage, he was a rumor. When he left it, he was a legend.” Among other things, he plays The Troggs’ Wild Thing.

HONORABLE MENTION: Queen: Live Killers. Contains a balls-out version of We Will Rock You that will open your ears.

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at Fillmore East
The Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!
The Who - Live At Leeds
Led Zeppelin - How the West Was Won
Pink Floyd - Pulse

I'm biased towards the Grateful Dead (my fave) and there many great live releases.
