They don't make memorable movie themes anymore.

I was under the impression that composers just ran out of ideas. However, I've heard some say that the studios won't let them write memorable themes anymore because it's too "distracting." So I don't know.

They don't make memorable movies period anymore. And instrumental music doesn't sell very well so better to use pop songs so you can sell more units.

You didn't think was about art in anyway did you?

reply

I wonder if that’s truly the reason for not using instrumental music as themes in newer movies.

I was just talking about this with my cousin. The last memorable score that I can think of is in The Hateful Eight. Other than that, I really can't remember any good ones recently.

For me, Brokeback Mountain (2005) had the last honest-to-god memorable movie theme.

The Avengers' theme is quite memorable. Also Game of Thrones'.

The Game of Thrones theme was rubbish I thought. Especially the first one with just a cello. But even after they tricked it up with an orchestra it was still ordinary.

reply

Rubbish? Wow.

Yeah it was dull and boring. Just droned on and on. Here is a good theme in my opinion. The music for the opening credits of Carnival Row:

I agree

reply

Absolutely. I went to see Jurassic Park in the theatre a few years back and they were playing the theme music in the lobby. Instantly recognizable.

Here is a great one by Jerry Goldsmith in the 70’s and the score is better than the film! Themes like this were par for the course back then.

Hanz Zimmer makes some amazing music and there is John Williams too, although he said he is done. I think part of the problem is that you have a lot of rebooting/sequels which means that composers are working off of and adjusting an original theme rather than creating something entirely original. There's some good music production companies out there also. Personally I think Two Steps From Hell makes outstanding thematic music which is used in some films and shows.
