Chores you like or dislike

We all have household chores to do. Which ones do you dislike the most? And which ones do you not mind doing?

Dislike: cleaning the bathroom (need I say more?)

Okay: laundry, washing dishes, and dusting (instant gratification when things look better afterwards) Mowing the lawn is okay too, for the same reasons.

My list is identical to yours

I would only add that snow removal is a huge pain in the ass...I could do without the blower, shovel and salt routine 3-4 months a year

reply

I'm with you completely on shoveling snow. A total pain. Even though it looks better afterwards, it's ๐Ÿ‘Ž.

reply

I love cutting grass. I cut 2 acres with a zero turn and I always look forward to it.

reply

The bonus is being outdoors.

reply

My brother really enjoys this, too. He even cuts the grass at his boss's farm - he likes to stay busy.

reply

I love cutting grass too. Sometimes I even cut the neighbor's.

reply

I detest housework. I basically do the yard work, the snow shoveling, the garage, the two cars and the garbage.

reply

Housework is a thankless job. Never-ending and almost as soon as you finish, it needs to be done again. Some days I feel like it's all I do - dust, and by the end of the day it needs doing again. Dishes, too. Never done.

reply

Like: walking the dog because it helps with anxiety, gets both me and the dog exercise, and then the dog isn't uppity at night around dinnertime.

Dislike: unpacking boxes 3 years after you moved in, finding a lot of junk you didn't want to deal with in addition to 1 or 2 things you wanted, and sorting it all out.

reply

get to work on that

reply

Moving is often an overwhelming task. I feel your pain. I've lived in my current home for six years and I believe I still have a couple of boxes that need to be dealt with. I don't relish the thought of "why did I think I needed to move this stuff?"

You're right about walking the dog - exercise and getting out of the house are good.

reply

"Chores"? That's a woman's job.

๐Ÿคจ You could be in trouble with this comment.

All of them

my parents had a reasonably large yard (a bit more than an acre if i remember correctly) & mowing the lawn was the only thing i found really enjoyable.

being forced to do yard work & hating pretty much all of it cemented in me opposition to home ownership. i am a-ok with apartment life, never weeding or trimming hedges or any business ever again.

i really hated weeding in particular, though if we'd had podcasts back then, i might have found it at least tolerable - or if i'd had a decent walkman at least.

Really hate:

Ironing - I just don't do it. I have tricks and methods that eliminate the need anyway.

Dishes -- well I DO still wash my dishes because you kinda have to, lol, but I hate doing them. It also hurts my back after a short while, the way you stand at a sink, might be my height not helping there.

Cooking. I hate to cook. It gives me NO pleasure the way it does other people. I make meals that require the absolute minimum prep. I microwave stuff -- it's not only boxed TV dinners that you can microwave, you can steam vegetables and even make an omelette super fast in a microwave. Another reason I hate to full-on cook is because I hate to wash dishes and pile of pots and pans.

Love:

I actually really enjoy vacuuming! I love the repetitive back and forth motion, it's soothing and I love being very methodical (yes I create those "lawn stripes" in the carpet!) and I love the results, a clean, transformed floor. Have you noticed that even if everything else above is dusty, messy or cluttered, cleaning up just your floors makes the place seem/appear to be like it's clean and tidy, lol? I love to vacuum.

Tidying, sorting, organizing, rearranging.
I enjoy tackling clutter, sorting through things, and putting things in proper order or placement. It's very therapeutic.

reply

Hate all those things for the same reason. I tolerate vacuuming and organizing because I like clean rugs and floors. Having everything in its proper place makes life run more smoothly. Nothing like searching a half an hour for a roll of tape or a stapler to put me off the greater task.

reply

I never liked cooking either. I don't mind ironing but I don't do it very often. I'd hate it if I had to do it a lot like my mom did. I don't mind washing dishes, but hate doing the messy pots and pans. I have a dishwasher but rarely use it. I know what you mean about clean floors, though. And if the floors are dirty, even if the rest of the house is tidied up, the place looks messy.

reply

Yes, my mom ironed a lot too - and the weird thing is, she loved it! She was the opposite of me; she said she found it very enjoyable and therapeutic. Blaugh, not me!

cooking is one thing i wish i had a little more patience for. i rarely want to bother with anything that takes more than 5 minutes of effort, so i have a lot of very simple stir-fries & wraps & so on. i love to eat though, & love east indian & thai in particular, and have always had the thought that i ought to really put some effort into learning how to do that properly. but then i think of all the effort, and go back to my favourite restaurants every two weeks or so instead.

reply

Stir frys and wraps can be healthy and delicious, so you're not really missing out on much by preferring 5-minute meals rather than more elaborate efforts. I know what you mean about thinking nah, I'll just go to my favorite Thai or Indian place instead, lol! And when you think how those guys really do it right...you'd have to buy all those herbs and spice and every little thing to get the flavors just right.

reply

exactly my thoughts.
the indian restaurant down the street makes a korma that i could not possibly love any more.
if i tried, could i get close to it, make some kind of approximation? maybe.
but really, i appreciate that they're there for me every two weeks. & they're nice people too, so i'm happy to support them.
