When an interviewer says ,“I have other interviews to conduct and then I’ll get back to you”, is this a nice way of saying you didn’t get the job? Or am I just overanalyzing things here?

reply

I think you are analyzing it just enough👎 not that warm fuzzy vibe your be looking for. But it could just be a canned response.

I think this could go either way. It could very well be that you're still in the running, but they have to go through all the interviews before the final decision. Or not... Let's hope they do get back to you, either way. I hate it when they say they will, but they don't.

I posted the email below. However, I changed the wording a bit from the original to keep anonymity. I had a working interview with this office September 17th and 18th. I'm currently working full-time between two places (2 part-time positions right now). I'm looking to leave one office (but haven't given notice yet) to work at this office I had the interview at.

"Hi Eric,

Sorry for the late reply.
Hey it was great having you up here last week.
So if I understand your situation correctly, you are currently working full time and are not in a complete rush to give notice at your current place and start working here. So before we offer you a job I want to be able to know exactly what type of schedule we would be giving you etc. If you were not quitting another job we would get you to start working here right away but seeing that you are leaving a job for this one we want to make sure we don't mess anything up for you. We got a call last Friday from another candidate that wants to interview the same position as you. So we want to just meet him before making any final decisions. He is wanting similar schedule like you (part-time). We are hoping that between you and him we can have a full time position here in the office. So this person is flying up October 22-24 for working interview. We will be able to make a final decision right after that.
Do you think this timeline would work for you? Are you able to wait that long? let me know what you think,"

I may be wrong here, but it sounds very promising to me. Hang in there, Eric. Good luck!

Thanks.

They just want to hire you as a full-timer preferably. It's hinted that if you want to be a full-timer instead, you can just contact them immidiately and they won't bother to interview the other guy.

reply

Possibly.

I bet there isn't even a 2nd guy. They may have lied about that to coax me to work there full-time. I already emailed them a couple of weeks ago that I would be willing to move there and work full-time instead. I haven't heard back since then. It's annoying that I have to wait a little over a month until late October to wait for their response though. Maybe they are seeing if I'm truly serious about this job??

What was the position ?

reply

A professional job at a small, healthcare clinic. Sorry, I don't want to get anymore specific than that.

reply

I can help

Sounds like you are def in the running.
I recently had a very nice hiring woman tell me, if you get an email it's No. If you get a phone call, it's Yes.
Then I got neither for a good three weeks, figured I was toast.
Finally I got a phone call. I think other candidates didn't pan out, so they got back to me.
But I had another lead that was much more welcoming, so that's where I'm going ... for now.

reply

Thanks. Yeah, a phone call would mean they're really interested in you. But I would think that if they were really interested in me, they wouldn't even have mentioned the 2nd guy they have to interview. That email they sent me was probably to get me to say I would work for them full-time (which I did respond back) but they haven't gotten back to me yet. Hate waiting.....

reply

It is in bad taste to mention the second interview.

reply

So, do you think that email they sent to me is a red flag then?

reply

Probably.

Personally, I think that email they sent you is a bad sign. If they really we're interested in you, they would hire you right away.

UPDATE: Well, he was supposed to email me back by Friday Oct. 26th to make a final decision. It has now been a month and half since I had the interview. He sent me an email on Sunday night on the 28th with the following:

"So The other person came up last week. He flew right out after the interview to a conference in boston so I haven't had the chance to talk to him yet since he is in the US. Will be chatting with him soon as a follow up and then will contact you. Sorry, didn't know if he was leaving the country right after. Should be getting in touch with you within a few days."

The employer also mentioned that this person has a cousin in town.

Can I assume this is a bad sign? This email doesn't sound right and sounds fishy to me. I don't appreciate him stringing me along like this especially for a month and half after I had the interview with him. I don't like anticipation and getting my hopes too high for that long amount of time. Thankfully, I do have job offers elsewhere and I was thinking that this would be the perfect job for me. However, he doesn't sound like an employer I would work for if this is how he treats interview candidates and it seems to me he is favoring the other guy. What do you guys think? Am I overreacting?
