Question to Americans only

I want to describe a product I am inventing and use the word ‘tuning’. I know Americans prounce it as “too-ning” but in Aus we make tu “chu”, so it’s “chuning”.

Would I need to americanize this when speaking to Americans?

reply

Yes.
We would have idea what you were talking about.

reply

I worked for a major electronics company where the word “tuning” was definitely in our hourly lexicon. There is *no way* we would pronounce it “chuning”! If someone said to me “These units are ready for “chuning”. I would answer “Huh? Say what? Chuning? What is chuning?” I enjoy hearing Aussie’s speak, but this would not fly.

reply

where are you from?

Americans actually change TU to CHU for words like future.

reply

tun·ing
[ˈto͞oniNG]

fu·ture
[ˈfyo͞oCHər]

I regret not being able to explain why these two words both have “tu” but are pronounced differently. You will have to consult someone who is knowledgeable in the field of etymology. Both are Middle English in origin.

I live in the United States. I have called Florida, Texas and Mississippi my home states.

reply

Most words changed sound due to people wanting to use less effort in speaking. Tu uses more energy than Chu. Temperature is a 4 syllable word that is generally spoken as three. "tem-pra-chure". And I don't think anyone in america says "tem-pra-tur".

reply

I hate when people drop Ts. Like internet as "innernet", which I notice a lot of people in america do.
Or pretty as "priddy".
Butter as "Bud-dah" also pops up from time to time.

reply

I got a great example of the word TUNE changing to CHUNE (well almost), the word FORTUNE. You don't say "for-tune" you say "for-chin".

reply

[ˈfôrCHən]

[ˈto͞oniNG]

Fortune and tuning. As I wrote prior I cannot explain why. These pronunciations are coming from the dictionary. They aren’t American. Middle English again

reply

" I would answer “Huh? Say what? Chuning? What is chuning?”"
You wouldnt just acknowledge (silently) that a word had been pronounced slightly differently due to international accent and move on?
I dont freak out everytime am american says Toosday instead of Choozday.
It does weird me out when you say chassis though - make me wonder how you pronounce champagne, or chamfer , or chandelier.

reply

champagne: Like this: [SHamˈpān]

chamfer: [ˈ(t)SHamfər] Why the (t)? You got me.
chandelier: [ˌSHandəˈlir]

From a certified Australian “I've found a common mistake for Australians using an American accent is the overuse of the letter R. We Aussies don't really pronounce R's as much as we should, especially at the end of words. For example, we would pronounce "under" as Un-dah.

As this is one of the most obvious differences between Australian and American accents, Australians have a habit of adding R's where they don't really belong. An example of this would be the word "China". Occasionally an Australian trying to pronounce this in an American accent will say "Chi-ner".”

I’m still searching for why ch instead of tu.

reply

We also have a similar pronunciation change among Americans: Instead of [ˌmasəˈCHo͞osəts] some say Masa tu sets for Massachusetts

Notice the ch being changed to a tu? Reverse from an Aussie. And apparently most of us in the US are pronouncing it incorrectly. I along with most say it with 3 syllables: Masa chu setts.

reply

No need for that...accents are pretty fun and Americans love them
Dont change a thing bloke:)

If your invention is as good as The Shamwow i would like to pre-order a case right now

Hit me up
I am expecting a deal for the early order of course...

reply

LOL and yes, Shogie!

😎

reply

As I wrote before, I love the Aussie accent, but it would behoove him (I assume) to pronounce tuning as most English speaking folks do. Chuning fork? Chune to FM..? Chune to channel...? Why not just say *Tune*?

reply

Oh c'mon!
What funny accent is more awesome than the Aussie accent??

I will order Australian stuff all day

But so far they only sell giant knives and Crocodiles...

reply

You’re right...the Aussie accent can be funny, but I’ve always thought it was sexy! They didn’t come any sexier than Crocodile Dundee wrestling around with those crocs using nothing more than that thingy of a knife!

reply

'Thingy of a knife..'

I think its fair to say that you have a gift for phrasing😂

reply

Blame it on being from the South...I jus’ can’t hep it.

How much further can we take this thread? We’ve got great minds at work here. Poor fella just wanted to know if “chuning” would be acceptable in place of tuning and we keep right on a truckin’! Darn spell corrector correcting youchube to you huge! This has been a lot of work for me!

reply

I love the South!
Nice people and good country (NOT the country music...yuck)

We seem to have mastered the art of taking a thread too damn far here on MC lolololol

Just be alert...A Mod has been called out in a rather fresh manner and two Big Boy posters are currently feuding so its a fine night to guard your six

reply

Where and who? We need a bit of drama now and then. What does “guard my six” mean? Rear end?

reply

Oh its just too much drama lol

Oh my have you not been keeping up?!?
Drama all day lately
You have homework dear

'Rear End' lolol!
'Guard your six'
It means watch your back, another poster seems hell bent to get deleted this weekend (he does this sort of thing, its all very odd to me but hes not a bad sort...its just his thing...)

reply

“Oh my have you not been keeping up?!?” I guess I haven’t. For one thing I have so many programs to watch and delete recorded on my satellite rcvrs from when I was in Florida for 4 weeks. I use the app on my phone or iPad to shoot a record option when I’m away. I’ve been back and forth 3 times for extended stays since February. Secondly there’s someone who is so foul mouthed I tend to skip over the posts. I suppose I miss a lot of that “drama” when I do that. Over at the other place we could Ignore someone, but still read the thread. Too bad we can’t do the same here.

reply

Sorry to hear you are running back and forth so much.
I was unaware of your situation and did not intend to be flippant

Cant be easy
for you

As for your 'admirer' forget about it
Its not long for the world im certain

The refuse tends to get taken away at the curb

Gotta have a thick skin because a small number of weirdos are always around

You are made of hard stuff and you have personality to spare

reply

Damn! I believe I'm the refuse...the wierdo...and the admirer...all rolled into one😕

I honestly thought K⚡PK🔔P and I had put all that behind us...???😨

reply

Nope
Not in my view anyway

If you and kspkap have an issue im not aware of it
Hope this is not the case

reply

Well I'm glad to hear that😀

A small history...that you were inadvertently involved in...but that deals with a...darker time in your and my history😉 speaking of which...thought I read something last night about someone calling you board diplomat or the like. Just so you know...I think that's a compliment👍 always said you were the most congenial cat around this joint...wear that title proudly my man👍👍👍

reply

Thx
You are cool too

Lets have a good time this weekend Amigo

reply

It's gonna be a weekend of grinning and winning😉👍

reply

I don't think it is you at all.
I think it might be someone else entirely.
Think dog and baseball bat, maybe?

reply

Gotcha👍 makes sense...especially since I've tried to not curse lately😉

reply

You weren’t flippant. I won’t tell if you don’t....I enjoy the heck out of you.☺️ Sure hope Mrs. Shoggie doesn’t find out!😏 Cause I’d have a whole lotta splainin’ to do!

reply

Oh you😉

reply

Hit me up K⚡PK🔔P...I 'll give you the play by play on all the drama👍
But seriously it's more like comedy...at worst dramedy! All good fun...even the angriest party is loving it😉

reply

*Dramedy lol!

reply

Man I'm trying to keep it light hearted...have offered olive branches and been trying to roll with the punches😉👍 but my man just went the shit talk my wife and marriage in some other thread...why is that? It's cause he thinks it's gonna send me into a rage...like soft? Man soft was my buddy...whole different story!
Dudes just an angry old man and I ain't stooping down...ima rise above...let that good humor sail my boat...you feel me?

What the fuck you doin up so late?

reply

I would have no trouble understanding it pronounced that way.

reply

I would, sorry to disagree. I was in the electronics field for over 30 yrs. Tuning was and is pronounced as it should be...tooning.

reply

that reminds me, I need to call a piano chuner

reply

You can do it yourself, just need to watch some tutorials on YouChube.

reply

That did it! It’s run to the potty time!!😅😂🤣 This^^^^

reply

“chutorials”

reply

choo guys are very helpful.

reply

I say youchube, but I think I say tutorial as 'ta-torial'.

reply

Are you serious? You really say youchube? I had to keep typing it because my spell corrector kept correcting to “you huge”!

reply

your spell corrector says "you huge"? sounds like your spell corrector is very intimate whichoo.

reply

Tomorrow the school system is sponsoring a 10K race, (about 6 miles) so I need to go to "The Finish Line" choo store and buy a new pair of running choos,

reply

Eye'm purdy chure dat de hole lyltin' ting @ de en ov de sentants myt annoi dem moa 😎

reply

Either I’ve had too much of that bourbon sauce again, or....?

reply

I just thought of “Who Killed Roger Rabbit”. It was one of those wascals in “Chuneville”!

reply

While this is all very true Ksp, the Aussies have a habit of raising their voices right at the end of a sentence which makes it sound like a question even though it is not.

That's what I was fumbling for with my derogation of our common language.

reply

I got lost after “de hole”. It looks almost like Creole.

Edit: Haitian Creole

reply

I'll translate for you Ksp.

I'm pretty sure that the whole lilting thing at the end of the sentence might annoy them more

I hope that helps!

I do like Creole food though, particularly gumbo and jambalaya.

reply

Yep! Haitian Creole. BTW, where I live in MS it’s Cajun cuisine everywhere and I do mean everywhere! This area is so tied to New Orleans and their customs.

reply

Well I feel doubly complimented on your interpreting my gobbledygook as Creole then Ksp.

You've got an ear for it!

Wasn't my intention, I was just screwing with English as I happen to love language and all the oddities attached to them.

reply

Teacher: Make a sentence using the word "dandelion."

Student: De cheeta is fasta dandelion.

reply

I laughed out loud (Or LOL'd as the middle aged adults say these days).

Oh, I should have added literally into that sentence somewhere!

reply

It’s called uptakking and most Americans under 35 do it.

reply

It's really irritating.

reply

I notice most celebrities do it when interviewed. In fact, if you don’t, you sound more serious.

reply

You do?

reply

Im pretty sure I’ve stopped doing it. Probably why people think I’m stuck up.

reply

Makes sense.

I wind up a lot of my Aussie mates by always assuming they are asking me a question and responding to it with an answer such as "Did you?" "You are?" and so on.

It pisses them off but I think I've got a couple of them to at least notice that it's an odd trait for an English speaking country to have.

reply

In the UK it would be pronounced T-you-ning.
Maybe a good middle ground?

reply

Really? I assumed the UK folks would pronounce it as we do [ˈto͞oniNG] from the dictionary.

reply

Nope, we don't pronounce it toon as in moon, nor do we pronounce it choon. I'm not entirely certain that ALL Australians do either!

Thanks for the info. I will attempt to locate and read.
