Your favorite genres? Some examples??

Lets chat about our favorite genres, offer a fine example or two of each and share ideas about the things we want our fellow chatters to see and hopefully enjoy too:)
Me first!
I love...

Horror- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a lovely masterpiece that still disturbs and leaves one thinking they have seen a bloodbath when in fact there is very little blood in the film!
Masterpiece (several actors were disturbed and or harmed during filming)

Sci Fi- The Empire Strikes Back
This one had thrills, great FX, a sweet romantic angle and an awesome climactic lightsaber fight between the baddest dude in the universe VS a brave young pup who just wasnt ready but left it all on the floor anyway
Plus Han Solo...c'mon, total winner of a Sci Fi adventure

Action- First Blood is the rousing action tale of a government trained baddass trying to adjust to his new, peaceful life but society and the law wont stop pushing him
He makes a whole damn town regret that ingratitude
One of Sly's best movies and up there with the TOP actioners of all time

FRENCH KISS ROCKS.

reply

Jeepers Creepers is a good one. It was definitely somewhat different when it first arrived on the scene. Rewatched it recently for the umpteenth time, just for simple, pure, entertainment value.

reply

MY MOM AND I SAW THAT AT THE THEATER...IT WAS PRETTY DAMN AWESOME...TOO BAD ABOUT THAT SILVA GUY AND THE BULLSHIT REPUTATION HIS FILMS ALL CARRY NOW....I TRIED TO WATCH THE SEQUEL BUT IT WAS A FIRST DATE AND WE ENDED UP HAVING SEX INSTEAD...NEVER CAME BACK TO IT.

reply

I was sorting my imdb rated movies by genre, but I tried to pick movies that really were in that genre. You know some movies are called horror but they really aren't.

reply

The sequel is pretty good, imo. Everything after that, just seemed to kind of deteriorate.

reply

I DID SEE THE THIRD ONE FOR SOME REASON...I REMEMBER IT BEING STUPID.

reply

I always try to pick movies that I would watch at the moment the question was asked. So I could watch this lineup tonight and be happy.

reply

French Kiss is a well-regarded movie from my French-speaking ex.

eXistenZ is a frickin' banger. :-)

reply

Musical....Xanadu 1980, surely?

reply

Stop.

reply

How would you compare The Big Racket to The Big Steal (1990)?

reply

I would hope that The Big Steal would be a tad bit more light hearted. lol

reply

Give it a watch and find out for yourself! It's a fantastic popcorn classic if I do say so myself!

reply

Thank you for the recommendation!

reply

Excellent list!

The New York Ripper is worth mentioning, though. My favorite Fulci movie.

reply

It’s one of his best, and most sadistic in my opinion also. Fulci was an interesting director with a great filmography. I don’t think he knew how appreciated his works were in his lifetime.

But yeah, we could make a list twice as long as my original and I’m sure they would all be top notch films. If you have any others to add, from any Italian directors, please do.

reply

Yup, Fulci was absolutely unique.

Some great movies from Italian directors:

reply

I don’t think I’ve seen Nightmare or Macabre so I’ll be looking them up. Thats some nice collection pieces right there!!

reply

Thanks man!

reply

Oh, wait. I had no clue that Nightmare (1981) was an Italian film. That flashback scene is something that was seared into my memory forever. lol

reply

It's an American movie, but it's directed by an Italian and thought it was worth mentioning. Yeah, that flashback scene is really something haha.

reply

More that I really enjoy:

And God Said to Cain (1970)
Nightmare City (1980)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Violent Naples (1976)
Death Smiles on a Murderer (1973)
Shock (1977)
The Last Hunter (1980)
Eyeball (1975)
Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh (1971)
Caliber 9 (1972)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
Keoma (1976)
Black Sunday (1960)
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Hitch-hike (1977)
The Blue Eyed Bandit (1980)

reply

Definitely great movies. Haven't seen And God Said to Cain, Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh and Keoma, though.

Some more great Italian movies

I love that you have so many interesting releases of these Italian flicks.

Eaten Alive is an interesting one and Umberto Lenzi, is my favorite director. I’m also a big fan of Ivan Rassimov, who plays the Jim Jones type in it. He more often than not played secondary characters, but when in bigger roles he was fantastic. I’ve dug deep into Lenzi’s and Rassimov’s filmographies and it’s been a lot of fun.

But yeah, if you have other nice physical copies of other Italian films, especially in VHS, I’d love to see more.

reply

Umberto Lenzi is great, no doubt. Cannibal Ferox is another movie I absolutely love that he directed. Yeah, Ivan Rassimov is awesome. He's also excellent in Rome Armed to the Teeth & Colt 38 Special Squad, imo.

reply

Absolutely agree!

reply

More VHS tapes from my collection :)

reply

That’s a very interesting cover on Don’t Torture a Duckling, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before.

reply

It's a Dutch VHS. I've been told that it's kinda rare.

reply

I have an all regions Blu-ray/DVD player but I haven’t quite perfected something for VHS. I have an inline filter to go from PAL to NTSC but I’m still lacking a PAL VCR. So I have a stack of VHS that I still can’t play at this point.

reply

That's too bad, man. Maybe it's possible for you to buy an old VCR somewhere online?

reply

I just happened to have watched Zombie last night. Damn, Fulci builds a huge sense of dread in that film. I think I like it more every time I see it.

reply

My favorite genre is undoubtedly mystery and suspense films. I value independent and low-budget productions much more than big-budget productions. I especially enjoy films that put a group of people in front of something unknown and see how they react. I don't like gore, but I do like psychological horror.

Two examples I can give are:

- The Endless: A movie that never stops getting weirder, it's great (this movie expands on the lore of the movie Resolution).
- The Prestige: One of the best movies in history.

I also really enjoy sci-fi movies, and I always give extra points if they are unconventional, for example:

- District 9: This one literally blew my mind.
- Midnight Special: A fairly strange and entertaining movie.
- The Vast of Night: A movie that must have cost 20 cents and I loved it.

Finally, I have to mention dramas. I never sit down to watch them directly, but I end up watching them eventually, when I don't have anything else available. And yet some of the best movies I've seen are dramas. I can mention:

- 99 Homes: A movie that I find terrifying, where a family loses their home and the lengths they will go to get it back.
- No Country for Old Men: I've lost count of how many times I've seen it, it's simply perfect.

reply

Nice to meet you Nando:)
I like similar movies, I'm just not a big fan of dramas.
Welcome to MC! Hope to see you around.

reply

Wow! 4 years since their last post - is this a record?

reply

Ha! I didn't notice.
It might well be a record!

reply

Thanks @ShogunofYonkers, nice to meet you too. See you around!

Horror. Maybe it's because even bad horror movies manage to be somewhat entertaining, and there are a lot of them.

Horror - Psychological horror where the sense of dread builds in intensity until all hell finally breaks loose.

Alien - Starts out as atmospheric, understated horror and then shifts gears midway through. Kind of turns into a slasher, really.
