Spoilers in the forum, especially in forum thread titles?

I wanted to ask the policy, if any, on unannounced spoilers in the forum, especially in thread titles.

I just reported someone for that; I don't want to have to avoid entire forums (or the site) so that I don't see what happens in episodes or series or movies I haven't seen.

I just wondered if there is any way other than 1. see spoiler 2. click on ignore button of individual to respond to these.

It seems unnecessary to post spoilers in thread titles or unannounced spoilers anywhere, since there is a spoiler tag.

Thank you.

Example of spoiler tag:

Warning! Spoiler below!

I actually don’t disagree with you here. At the very least if a show or movie is fairly new they probably shouldn’t put spoilers in the title.

reply

Yes I agree I think some people genuinely get a kick out of spoiling stuff.
If it's a fairly recent show/film it's definitely poor show.
Even if it isn't there's no need to put it in the title of a thread.

reply

I agree also. A spoiler should not be included in the thread title. And a spoiler ⚠️ should be part of the title if there are going to be spoilers in the body of the post. But, it was unnecessary to report someone over this. I courtesy request not to include spoilers to the poster would be the adult way to handle the situation. Then again...no one is forcing someone to read the post.

reply

Oh what a tangled web we weave. When first we practice to deceive.

Thin ice here, do you not want to know that George Bailey sorts his shit out in It's a Wonderful Life?

How's about Verbal being Keyser SΓΆze in The Usual Suspects?

What about Jabba the Hutt being Snoke's father in The Last Jedi?

I agree that intentionally ruining someone's enjoyment of a movie is crappy, but how long must it take before discussion of important plot points can be discussed freely between people who watched it and wish to explore the reasons why or how it was done?

I've trolled in real life. I saw The Dark Knight whilst in Vancouver and set off to Seattle afterwards (which hadn't had a release yet). In the hotel there I told my fellow happy campers that Jim Gordon dies in the movie they were about to go and see. They laughed it off and called me an asshole but when they returned I was totally the king of assholes for pulling a double whammy on them and got free beer and a shitload of giggles and friends who are still dear to me to this day.

I'd suggest staying away from movie /TV boards which have been released and which you haven't seen.

Can you imagine if someone rocked up to a sports team's website and insisted that nobody tell them the outcome of a game which had just been played? They'd be run out of town!

As for people 'spoiling' things which haven't been released...double edged sword in my opinion. Trolls, like me, will purposefully plant deceitful spoilers just because of the excitement level and wonder about a particular story. It's part of the fun. People who genuinely spoil things which they've managed to see early are assholes, but that's all part of the mix. When a movie or show differs from books or older stories that they're based upon potential spoilers are just that, potential.

Just like Jabba being Snoke's father in The Last Jedi.

Use the ignore function if you see a repeat offender and report when you think it is worthwhile. Exploit that feature though and it could be your head on the chopping board πŸ™„

reply

Wow,you're sensitive about this!

I think we can all agree that there is no need to put a spoiler in a thread title and it's courteous to use the spoiler tag over anything sensitive, especially in a new show or when a show like GoT goes out in the US the day before it does in the UK for example.

It's just dickheadery really but god forbid anyone objects to the rights of trolls eh? [winkgrin]

I haven't seen The Last Jedi,and I highly doubt that's true anyway...and yet.
Having said that plenty of it has been spoiled already by posters right here on the GD board.

reply

I don't know if I'm sensitive Dazed (I could be) but this pandering to the lowest common denominator is just silly (It that's what the OP is asking for, it's all in my head at the moment as they've not supplied details).

You don't want spoiled? Stay away from places likely to do just that!

This is like a burger van being fined and shut down until they provide a Bengali variation on their chalkboard along with Halal and Kosher alternatives and a vegan option for left handed people.

It's a burger van, leave it be and let its community thrive by itself!

reply

I don't see that comparison. But I don't really understand how it's amusing or exciting to post spoilers or even fake spoilers in the first place.

I don't think it's too much to ask,I really don't.I mean yes a lot of content has been out they're for years and is fair game naturally but even so,how hard is it to think just a tiny bit before you post?

reply

Simple case and point Dazed.

How does one word a thread title in the Shutter Island forum which won't give away a potentially important plot point but still be relevant enough to make fans click and read on?

When you find out the answer is to click on every thread and read regardless because we're worried about spoiling things you'll see that the quality to quantity ratio dives into a death.

I still think Teddy is Dolores the whole film though and she just thinks she's Teddy to atone for her sins. The fact her bed is in the woman's ward is proof enough of that.

As for fake spoilers...c'mon! Their the best ones! πŸŽ‡

reply

I thought he was Rachel Solando? Or was that his dream within a dream as they had tampered with his totem (the gun)?

reply

I think Rachel is his/her way of projecting that she is lost and Dolores' secondary adopted personality as her husband sees her when she is only really looking at how lost she is within Teddy.

Either way it's a great movie which requires spoilers in the thread titles so that people know what conversation they'll be taking part in before clicking them πŸ˜‰

reply

I'm sorry but that made little sense.

I feel that you want the forum to operate exactly on your terms which means, should you fancy it you can post spoilers real or fake which you admit is more often than not to troll.I know you're not stupid and are capable of thinking before you type as are the majority,so I can only surmise that you're fighting for the right troll.

It's more than possible to accidentally spoil something and I think most people would happily edit a post were it to be drawn to their attention without resorting to reporting.
What do you suggest people do when they come across blatant, deliberate spoilers?

It's one thing to avoid a specific board until you've watched the film.Maybe look for ratings elsewhere. However we try not to post spoilers of recent stuff here on GD.For instance I already know
Luke tricks Kylo
at the end and that was from a poster here allegedly trying not to spoil it!

Just common sense really. That and consideration.

reply

As Moderator 5 states further down this thread blatant spoiling of movies for the sake of spoiling can and are removed (With I'd assume a warning given).

They then state that spoilers on movies aren't a thing which normally would get banned.

I'm off the same ilk. If a film has been out long enough and someone wishes to discuss key plot points with others then having the thread illustrate what they are discussing is an important enough thing to let the world know so that you may get some answers or just general discussion about it.

Spoilers on GD titles is a big no-no from me as its not general discussion and people use this board to talk about things which perhaps don't have their own board. If a spoiler comes up within a thread on GD I'll be happy enough with it if it isn't about a very recent movie or immediately after someone recommends a movie and the first reply goes into spoiler territory of said recommendation.

All in all chill and don't be too much of a dick on purpose in the wrong places would be my take from all of this.

I hope that's clearer.

reply

Much clearer thank you.

I think it's definitely more of an issue with movies or shows that are current.
Examples would be TWD or GoT which are often shown the following day from the original US showing and I know people who do avoid the internet until they've seen it.

Of course if something's been around for a while it's better to be careful and avoid it's board until you've seen it,you're unlikely to want to discuss an older film until you've seen it anyway and you are less likely to understand the context of a subject line.

reply

hey Reality963 STFU!
what the hell wrong with you?
first 2 sentences of post - 2 spoilers - bang!
I then skipped to the end to avoid no doubt a dozen more.
I saw the bit where you admit planting imaginary spoilers and stirring sh1t up.
I realise they are old movies , but if you cant stop yourself giving out spoilers in a discussion about spoilers ... there is no hope

reply

Rosebud was his sleigh.

reply

While's it's certainly bad form to "spoil" a movie in thread titles... it is also bad form to report your fellow forum members for the slightest transgression...

Also, there is a blurred line in some instances as to what constitutes a spoiler...

Does Leia's lesbian love interest in The Last Jedi count?

What about discussing spoilers freely once a CONTAINS SPOILERs tag has been used in the thread title?

Can we just use common sense and courtasey or do we have to resort to reporting one another as a first step simply because someone didn't use the spoiler tags in a way that we deem appropriate?

reply

"Does Leia's lesbian love interest in The Last Jedi count?"
YES IT FUUCKING DOES!

reply

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

reply

Disclaimer: She doesn't actually have a lesbian love interest... Or maybe she actually does, come to think of it... πŸ€” Worth a rewatch at some point to make sure...

reply

I think if a spoiler tag is used in the subject line that's fair warning.

reply

yes spoilers are bad
yes the thread title is the worst place to put a spoiler because you dont even have to be on the page for the movie your avoiding to see it.

I'm not reading the rest of the thread as its full of dick heads who cant talk about spoilers without throwing out example spoilers in some sort of verbal diarrhea attack

reply

I'd advice also staying away from newspapers, websites and people in general if you don't want to see spoilers on any potential thing that exists in the universe Mark πŸ˜‰

reply

yep , "Its a F**king tightrope" as Renton said in Trainspotting. Hope thats not a spoiler.
I had the major surprise of starwars 7 spoiled 24 hours before I'd eventually got round to watching it.
Some completely unrelated youtube "top 10 bullsh1t" video just threw it in .
I'm trying not to find out anything about Last jedi , but I'm waiting for DVD release before watching it.

reply

That's fair enough Mark. TLJ gets talked about across both its own board and others (Including here).

Some people will post things expecting others to already be in the know. If you get a whiff of that from anyone I'd recommend putting them on ignore until after you've seen it and then unignoring them and taking part in the very passionate conversations it seems to have inspired 😊

reply

Mate... the world will spoil any star Wars movie for you if you wait until discs... It's everywhere online as well as in conversation...

Very difficult task you've set yourself...

reply

We do not have a site spoiler policy. The moderators discussed it, but we never reached a clear consensus except that we agreed enforcement would be difficult and could lead to over-moderation.

That said, we may act in egregious cases, i.e. posts that serve absolutely no purpose other than to spoil. You are welcome to report any that you come across. Here's an example, using the film The Sixth Sense:
Someone had posted on The Sixth Sense board "Bruce Willis is a ghost!!" in the thread title, and "Spoiled it for you" in the thread body. That one I deleted. (And, unsurprisingly, the person who posted it was banned months ago for other reasons.)
reply

That seems like a proper way to moderate discussion, when the purpose of the thread is solely to be a dick to others.

However I'd stipulate that a thread titled "When did you clock in about Malcolm not being what you are meant to think?" and actual discussion about points in the movie which give away clues to what that title might mean is a fine title on a movie which has been out for nearly 20 years now.

Over moderating or having incredibly sensitive members go to areas were discussion among fans and haters alike are both situations which will stifle discussion which is an odd thing for a site called Movie Chat.

reply

I would not remove the hypothetical thread you mentioned. We very rarely act on the basis of spoiler content. I've done it a handful of times in the last six months and mostly on the Game of Thrones board where leaked/pre-broadcast plot points were being revealed in the thread titles.
