The Eighties

Hey all,
I have been having a really hard time finding good movies from the 80s that I haven't already seen before. Like all the teen movies I've pretty much seen.. if anyone could recommend some movies from the 80s that are not horror movies that would be great!
Thanks!

Escape From New York

Any other anthologies?

reply

thanks for the suggestions :)

reply

I think i saw all of these.. those are all horror movies though right? That would be why..haha :)

reply

Always been meaning to watch The Untouchables. :) Boy do I ever need to make a list based on this thread and organize them. :)

reply

As for another Kevin Costner movie, you did see No Way Out?

reply

No I have not seen that actually. i never thought i would get so many suggestions. haha. its great though. i was just scrolling a list of 80s movies the other day and they all looked terrible..
I think the cover art was bad back then too though

reply

"Silverado" with Kevin Costner

reply

The good news about The Untouchables: it earned Sean Connery his Academy Award.

The bad news about The Untouchables: it was directed by Brian "Heavy Handed" De Palma. Proceed with caution. I have it in my movie library, but it could have been so much better with a more capable director.

reply

I remember seeing The Untouchables when it was still pretty new, but maybe had gone to the art house circuit.
During the famous scene with the stairs, some people started laughing, which got me laughing, and at least half the viewers thought it was amusing, but I seriously don't think that was the intent. When people are laughing during a serious movie, something's gone wrong, hahaha.

reply

They Live - good movie.

reply

Prince of Darkness is good too.

reply

And they are both John Carpenter movies.

reply

From when John Carpenter actually gave a crap.

reply

True, that.

reply

Just came across Modern Girls on AMC. Not actually a good movie, but I just wanted to mention something random.

reply

You're right it doesn't sound very good. Random is good though :)

reply

No one said Goonies?

reply

No one here is six years old.

reply

I did love that back in the day. I remember being too young to go see it and being totally jealous of my sister who got to go. Ah, memories hah

reply

Trancers
Rad
Gleaming the Cube
Heathers
Honkey Tonk Man
3 O'Clock High
Legend of Billy Jean

The Money Pit

My Cousin Vinny (almost 80s)

reply

Loved Heathers, could practically quote it. Don't know what made that movie so special. Feels like I watched it yesterday haha

reply

Greetings and salutations.

Spaceballs
Moonstruck
Indiana Jones
See no Evil, Hear no Evil
Dragnet
Remo Williams
Beetlejuice
Wisdom
Next of Kin
The Park is Mine
Biggles - Adventures in Time

reply

Chopping Mall
From Beyond
Re-animator

reply

i saw Chopping Mall, haha.. that's why I said no horror movies because I think I saw 90percent of them. hehe Its alright to suggest them though.

reply

Talking about 80s slashers, a few days ago I saw the the extended version of My Bloody Valentine on Blu-ray, which is MUCH better than the theatrical version. I really recommend it to everyone who has only seen the censored version. I think it's one of the better made old school slashers from the early 80s.

reply

I don't think i've even seen the original..

reply

Well, if you like movies like Friday the 13th, you might enjoy this one as well.

reply

Chopping Mall and From Beyond - added to my watch list.

reply

I so want to see this one again too. What was once scary, I'm sure is hilarious. Weren't they stuck in a mall in the new Dawn of the Dead too?

reply

Aren't they supposed to make a sequel to Beetlejuice?

And Wisdom was soooo good. Cool twist before everyone was doing them.

reply

That would be cool if they are making Beetlejuice 2. Yea, the ending of Wisdom is one of those stuck in your head things.

reply

Yes, i think its been in talks forever though. Would have to be the original cast though for me, but I'm sure they would do it. And yes Wisdom is a definite must see for anyone who hasn't yet. i haven't seen it in ages though, but I'm sure it holds up. i think he and Demi Moore were dating then too. I had such a crush on him too. haha

reply

There has been talk for years about Goonies 2 with the original cast. Talk about reliving childhood. Don't know if that will ever happen either but would be very cool.

reply

They would be so old though, I wonder how they would work that? I had such a crush on Sean Astin back then.. i thought little Mikey was so cute! I was younger than him at the time keep in mind. hahah

reply

I should have tried to read the thread before replying. Lotta good suggestions, but I slipped mine in closer to the top and didn't realize how many people were chiming in. There must be dozens of really quality films from the 80s (one I thought of turned out to have been made in 1970 -- Sometimes A Great Notion).
If you genuinely haven't seen most of them, wow, you've got a lot of great stuff to check out.

reply

i most def do have a lot of great stuff to check out. and i had the eighties pretty much written off. haha

reply

How about Baby Boom, starring Diane Keaton?

The Color Purple
Dead Poets Society

reply

i've seen all those, they were great though :)

reply

That's great. Have you also seen Red Dawn? It's the first movie to earn a PG-13.

reply

Daisy,

If you look through the filmographies of stars who are in their 50s-60s-70s now, you should find a lot of good films they made in the 1980s. For example:

Susan Sarandon -- Bull Durham, The Witches of Eastwick, The Hunger
Robert De Niro -- Brazil, Once Upon a Time in America, Raging Bull
Catherine De Neuve -- Scene of the Crime (Le lieu du crime), The Last Metro (Le dernier métro)
Al Pacino -- Sea of Love, Scarface
Diane Keaton -- Baby Boom, Reds
Tom Cruise -- Risky Business, Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July
Meryl Streep -- Out of Africa, Sophie's Choice, The French Lieutenant's Woman
Michael J. Fox -- the Back to the Future trilogy, Bright Lights, Big City, The Secret of My Success
Julie Andrews -- That's Life!, Victor/Victoria

reply

Thanks so much, and yes thats a great idea.

reply

I used to have such a thing for Al Pacino.. seems strange now for some reason.

reply

That's a great suggestion, looking up the filmographies of good actors who are now in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and even beyond.
