Odd Question

I'm sure at least one other person has wondered this at some point, but how come the actors never interacted on the IMDB message boards with any of their fans? I understand why the A-Listers might not, but I'm curious about the lesser known actors or the ones from beloved films and TV shows who no longer act.

reply

I think certain small time actors would on occasion... but mostly Twitter, IG and Facebook fan pages took over that function.

reply

True, but even before that there didn't seem to be a lot of interaction. I understand some just wanted normal lives and knew they wouldn't be able to just say something once without it opening the floodgates; however it seems like some of them might want to interact with the fans who never forgot them.

I remember that at one point, years ago, Casper Van Dien used to post quite a lot on his Message board. I used to visit there because I like Starship Troopers. He seemed like a cool guy. People were having doubts if it really was him so he posted a picture of him holding a paper where he had written something that proofed it really was him, I can't remember what the paper said anymore.

reply

I read that several actors signed the petition against IMDb closing the boards. So they were at least reading them, if not interacting with fans.

reply

Interesting. I had no idea about that. I guess some others were concerned about trolls or with being asked personal questions which they had no intentions of answering.

reply

Actors, directors and writers whose career is in the development phase are the ones who feel the loss of boards the most, cause they won't be able to read what the public thinks of their work. I bet they liked to read the encouraging comments.

reply

Oh wow! That actually throws out my assumption that they were negatively affected by the message boards.

reply

None of the A-list actors signed it though. And especially not the ones who at any point said anything positive about Polanski, cause there were people on IMDb who decided to never let them forget that fact and constantly complained about it on their boards.

reply

Well, it figures. The A-lists would not. Their publicity is at stake and actually, fans talking bad about them would really ruin their careers. They have to remain so neutral.

reply

Yes, but if actors start talking about politics and taking sides, they should expect the backlash (like any other public figure). So, it was their own big mouth that got them in trouble, and then they couldn't take the heat.

reply

Well, I think, for them, they understand that that will happen. I am just talking about side rumors of people trolling and saying untrue things about them. I like to think that, even when they take sides, the publicists actually tell them how to angle what they say. Sometimes, I think they go their whole life without actually saying what they want to say. They are bought out by the media. They want to be normal and live normal lives and this may be one reason why.

reply

Yeah, there was plenty of those. People inventing fake stories about celebrities and spreading rumors. I think that IMDb should've been erasing those posts more actively.

reply

And I think that is exactly why they may have done away with them. The actors/actresses and their publicists did not want to risk those comments being on that site for 1 second. Moderators also cost money, unless they were doing it for free.

reply

Why would they? They are in a whole another world and they, too, want to seem busy. Additionally, anything they say CAN and WILL be used against them in the real world (you thought I was going to say the court of law). This is why most have personal assistants or publicists who speak on their behalf.

reply

I met and interacted with one actor, who's pretty well known. For a long time we posted back and forth on another board, and I had no idea who he was, but liked him.

Then I saw he'd posted on his own board to thank a fan for something.

That's an interesting question, Holly. I have no clue.

They probably didn't care for it. I'm guessing some got curious of what fans had to say, but look at it's reputation that got it shutdown. They probably didn't care for it.
