Best movie franchise of all time?

What's the best movie franchise of all time in your opinion? To qualify as a franchise, it must have at least 3 or more movies.

For me it's a toss up between Star Wars and James Bond. Both have withstood the test of time and are still going strong. Likewise, both have had their ups and downs with a few missteps, but all in all they have done extremely well at the box office and in the eyes of critics, and I expect them to have continued success well into the future.

That's kinda tricky to answer, because the opinion can be skewed by a particularly good or particularly bad entry in a franchise that generally goes the other way, but still have an entry that is better than another entire franchise.

For example, I like the Harry Potter films. I think Batman is a much better film than any of those, however Batman and Robin is nowhere near as good and Batman Forever is terrible. Is HP better because it's consistent, or is Batman better because it has one excellent entry?

Also - are you counting different continuities (e.g. Batman '89 and TDK) as the same franchise or separate?

Having said that, I think these are all excellent franchises (in no particular order)

* Lord of the Rings
* Batman (1989 and Dark Knight versions)
* Harry Potter
* Back to the Future
* X-Men
* James Bond
* Star Wars
* Transformers
* Terminator

Indiana Jones, Mad Max, Lethal Weapon movies and the daddy of them all...James Bond.

I would say my favorite is the Indiana Jones “trilogy,” if we can call it that. 😀

None of them are really what they used to be, but for me it would be either the Rocky franchise (not including the Creed series) or James Bond as he appeared from 1962-1989.

Star Wars but the original three only. The prequels and Disney ones lose the plot.
Bond up to a point. I think it started running out of steam with Brosnan and became too over the top even for Bond. But it had a very good run.
Rocky and Rambo would have to be mentioned.
Lethal Weapon.
Not a fan but Harry Potter.
Back to the Future.
