what are the chances of this being deleted?

I love this site, and am happy i can view old threads,i'm worried this will be gone too at somepoint, how can I save some of the message boards I wanna keep?want to archive but don't know how?

reply

I think this site will probably be around for a good while. The owner is very dedicated to building it from scratch and has put in a lot of hard work in doing so. I don't think he's just going to abandon ship on us like IMDb did.

I wish I knew how to archive all my old posts as well but I had no idea of how to even begin so I lost them all...except for some that made it here. I don't know how many made it nor do I remember hardly any of the boards I posted on except a few. I checked the one's I could remember and did see SOME of my old posts...which was really neat...it gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. 😊

See certain posts here about some torrent you can download which archived much content with supposedly more coming. This is made to be read offline so you need not be online or logged in to enjoy it.

9, do you know the origin of this torrent and where it can be found? Do we know if anyone's downloaded it and if it's legit?

reply

I downloaded it but haven't opened it yet. I'm still seeding... right now someone from Holland is downloading it, yesterday it was someone from Russia... and few others before.

The link with original instructions is here: Link

Some additional info is also here: Additional info

Few other posters who opened it say it's legit.

Thanks, Apis! Got some learning to do before I can even think about touching it. Mostly I wanted to know if this site would benefit from lots of us downloading it and working with it. Doesn't sound like that would necessarily be helpful, though...

reply

No, I don't think it's necessary to download it. I did it only because I'm extra cautious now, and for sentimental reasons.

If anyone depended on me to actually use that data, they are as good as doomed lol

reply

Hey, you have props from me, because if anyone depended on me to download that by now or anything close to now, they'd be doomed even more surely. lol

It's great to know that people have saved so much data for potential public use again. Takes a lot of the sting out of the IMDb boards closure. Good stuff!

Thanks, 9! "Letter from Col Needham" is informative and hilarious.

When I first read the title, I thought u wrote something stupid on ur post and wanted to know how long the post will last. Hehe

reply

Sadly, life doesn't have many assurances. I always thought the imdb message boards would be there forever : ( But if this site ever goes away for whatever reason, you won't be alone. There will be many other original fans in the same boat, looking for a place.

I don't think it's something to worry too much about for now...

I never thought IMDB would drop the message board system, it had been around for decades, and with the rollout of Avatars just a few years ago it seemed even more confident, but here we are. Nothing on the Internet is for certain, even the Internet itself. So take each moment as it comes, and enjoy it, because it may not last.

The difference is that they were a company. This is being done by a person.

reply

but if this site grows, i'm fairly certain that the owner of this site will become a company. :p that is the nature of business.

reply

Yeah but the CEO(Jim) cares.

reply

agreed!

reply

That is so true.

Totally tangential, however, similar to this situation.

One time I had played this really awesome online football (American) game. It lasted two years with the guy finally selling it to a game company, which finally shut it down. The reason? The game developers and the creator could not fund their game. So assuming that the creator had put some money aside to make this website, I hope this site will be able to get the funding it needs to survive or else it may be sold off like that football game did. Man, that was such a fun online football game....

reply

I think a more likely scenario is selling advertising on the site, rather than selling/shutting down the site. Well, that and donations.

Haha, I think at that point, I'd just quit posting on forums LOL

reply

LoL...I think at that point, I'll be too old...or dead. 😉

reply

Yikes, I will be pretty old myself. I wonder if I will poo poo the newfangled technology of the future.
