The day some vacuous (having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence; mindless) person decided to equate it with 9/11. Suffer the fools! 🙇🏼‍♀️
The whole purpose of this exercise is to find a name for this even OTHER THAN 1/6, which I agree is lame and unimaginative. "9/11" itself is a kind of lame title, compared to something like "The Gunpowder Plot", "Pearl Harbor", etc. I've offered a few positive, neutral and negative (mostly negative, it's true) alternates to 1/6. Anyone may feel free to give 1/6 a proper name, and may spin it whatever way they like. The only requirement is that it be something catchy and memorable.
Calling it 1/6 is nonsensical. You are equating the day with 9/11 which is an insult and hurts loved ones left behind. If you start giving Jan. 6, 2021 the same status, you would have to fill a 2020 calendar with tags for every day after George Floyd. Where do you begin? Jan. 6, 2021 was a blip in history. Do you recall the day (no fair looking for it) of the Kent State shootings? The day of the Oklahoma City Federal Bldg. bombing which is on par with 9/11? Not as many murdered, but horrific.
So gives us a new name. I'll accept anything, even "the Nothingburger Plot". Exactly my point, everyone remembers "Kent State" because people were more imaginative back then and didn't give the date of something, they gave it a name. If you believe 1/6 was a "blip in history", then you should actually support the moniker "1/6", as it means people are more likely to forget it.
"Jan. 6, 2021 doesn’t need to be counter-branded. "
Then be prepared to lose the war over hearts and minds... And speaking of "vacuous", it doesn't get any more vacuum packed than claimed the Storming of Capitol was "just another day".
OK, "just another day of rioting"... what of it? Does any historian think the Storming of the Bastille or the Storming of the Winter Palace were "just another day of rioting", or pivotal, watershed moments in two years which were full of them? True, what happened at the Capitol was much less decisive than those two events (though arguably just as shocking symbolically), however, it could prove the pivot towards (soon-to-be?) events that are.
I've been wondering why the wikipedia page has this insanely wordy name. Coup is a great word, but it was a failed coup, so not really the best IMO. The Capitol Riot doesn't even require a date because it's a unique event.
