Killing off the tagalong child character would’ve probably been seen as too depressing for an Indiana Jones movie, especially when they already established that Mutt died.

It isn’t. Even in the original film, Marion is depicted as a headstrong woman who can outdrink men twice her size, and during her first scene with Indiana Jones, she calls him out for having taken advantage of her when she was younger.
She helped Indiana reconcile with Marion. That seemed like a pretty nice thing to do.

People have spent years attacking Snyder and accusing him of being a horrible person just because they don’t like his capeshit, not to mention the people who mocked the death of his daughter. He doesn’t owe those people anything.

The whole point of his arc in the movie is how he’s lost his way. If superheroes were never allowed to be flawed, there wouldn’t be much conflict in a story.
The line is meant to highlight how Batman has become consumed by fear and paranoia, much like how many Americans felt in the aftermath of 9/11. You’re not supposed to agree with him. That’s the point. He’s in the wrong, and Alfred calls him out on it.
