I’ve learned long ago that you need to form your own opinion about a film. Don’t let a critic tell you what to like.
I’ve loved films that are critically acclaimed. I’ve also hated other films that are critically acclaimed.
I’ve also loved some films that are critically panned. So who cares what they think? I guess critic ratings can be used as a guide, but ultimately I hope you realize that your opinion is the most important of all. It’s your experience and your time.
Yea at some point I’m sure they determined that they were NOT virgins. Maybe in a best case scenario they just served to please the officers sexually. As for George, yikes. He was either killed, punished, or made to sexually appease some of the more sexually fluid officers I would imagine. I’m sure he had it worst of all … unless he managed to escape, which I hope he did.
Well of course they are all dead *now*. But I mean in the immediate aftermath of the movie events. Were they really taken to a party? Did they really sing? Did they get to escape? The ending was too ambiguous for my taste, although it was a great film regardless.
It was probably a co-production between a Chinese studio and a foreign (likely US studio) to bypass the strict quota that is set on foreign films entering and being released in the growing China box office market. China is the only market that can hypothetically bring in revenue anywhere close to the US box office.
I think the specific story is fiction. Thank god it wasn’t true, although unfortunately it was based off of very true things that happened.
Just watched it. A solid 8/10. Loved this film. Although very brutal.
I gave this a watch years ago and thought it was pretty good. Gave it a rewatch and it’s so heartbreaking. I wish they would’ve told us what happened to the brothel women.
In retrospect, she only helped herself by not cutting him, as we saw how the film events unfolded. Her self-control ultimately helped her reunite with her lost sister and children.
Yes things would’ve been different if Nettie married Mister. Mister had a habit of being much more subservient to attractive women. At one point, Mister was the one serving Shug, catering to her and even making her breakfast (even if he did a poor job of it). He only did this because he was infatuated with her. Just like he was with Nettie. Shug was assertive, just like Nettie would’ve been.
Celie (as shallow as it sounds) didn’t have the looks to get away with that.
I’ve only become a recent moviegoer in the last several years as an adult. As a child or teen, we just didn’t have to resources to movie watch, so I’ve become used to the modern effects of contemporary horror movies. The Conjuring is a movie where I can’t really recall the specifics plotwise, but recall how I felt watching it and I was scared. Not pissing-in-my-pants scared, but emotionally uncomfortable and uneasy, almost wondering why I decided to watch it in the first place.
BTW, younger people may not find it scary because watching more modern horror films desensitizes you to older films, whose effects may not look as modern. Maybe some young ppl may be on their phones, but for most others, it’s just a matter of less advanced special effects.
I noticed it too, but who cares! This isn’t English class.
Despite being on the tail end of the Gen X generation, this movie was a bit before my time and I’ve only recently watched it.
It’s a great movie that still holds up well, but it’s not particularly scary. It almost feels like we watched a base template of a movie from which all future horror films built off of (which is likely true).
I have say that the obscenities in the film are still crude even by 2023 standards and it’s crazy how this movie made its way into theaters like this in the early 1970’s. There is no debating this film’s impact on popular culture.
I’m not a fan of the Lion King. It’s a little too cutesy for my taste with the entire cast of talking animals and such. I much prefer Little Mermaid. Here’s how I rank the Renaissance Era films:

Good observation. If it was cold enough to be freezing than maybe the Bologna didn’t spoil since the weather is basically refrigerator temperature. I was wondering the same thing until you mentioned it
Pay attention. The Queen was not Prince Eric’s birth mother. They found him and adopted him as their own. So being of a different ethnicity is of no surprise. There is no telling what land Eric was originally from, but now he’s a resident of his Caribbean-like kingdom, where he is one of only a handful of white residents.
As for King Triton and his multi-ethnic sisters.. well, it’s a fairy tale. If Triton is the king of the ocean, then it stands to reason that each sister is a princess to a different sea in a different part of the ocean, represented by the various ethnicities.
It’s possible it was filmed in a low quality film, making it virtually impossible to digitize in HD. After all, this is a TV series, not a feature length film.
We need a sample of this of course

I have a mental image of what “Part of your World” would sound like in R&B. I kind of like it.
I guess you have a point. But it seems like the MCU is inspired by the comics, not so much adapted from them. There will be some differences, as you’ve seen already (due to logistical and copywriting reasons).
