Ocean's 12 wasn't as well received as 11, so they made this one to end it on a better note, the budget was about 25 million less than 12's, closer to the 1st movie's 85 million, so they decided to write those characters out.

I always assumed Roman and Linus's dad were the other 2.
Flopped in the US... I doubt it will make over 60-75 million domestic.
Internationally it is likely to make a decent amount of money, so a sequel could happen, but it's not guaranteed.
330 million worldwide gross on a 150 million budget...
plus millions from home video, streaming, cable, tv, etc...

I think it doesn't matter if it's b&w or color, they simply haven't had Serling as writer/showrunner, nor found someone who has been able to replicate the tone he brought to the show... hopefully they will this time.
It's not a sequel nor a prequel, it's a standalone spinoff.
The "episodes" are the Skywalker family story and this one is Jyn Erso's.

Yes it is his last portrayal... I *wish* it had been the beginning of something under this same universe-tone-characters instead... I do think they could come up with a way to revive him, but unlikely to happen.
