If they had been alive today... their reaction?

I personally love this series, but I think both actors would hate this series and their portrayals.

I love it also, and that's a very interesting question. I tend to agree with you about Joan Crawford. I think she would hate it. But Bette Davis was so honest (at least she's portrayed that way), I think she would appreciate it.

reply

Yeah, I can definitely see Crawford being more uptight-critical... lack of respect towards her.

Bette would probably just say that it's rubbish and not that it as seriously, perhaps even a bit fun, without actually liking it.

This is off subject, but was Frank Sinatra really that insufferable? For those who haven't seen tonight's episode that is what I'm basing my question on.

reply

By all accounts, Sinatra had a massive ego and could be a mean bastard at times. He could also be kind, or fun.

I don't know if he was given to treating film directors that way, but around 1962 he was on top of the world and felt free to throw his weight around.

reply

True. He knew he could get away with it, because he was a big star. He was untouchable at that time.

reply

I'm thinking he wasn't that disrespectful to directors . I doubt he would have spoken to that script girl in that manner, I don't think. It's said that in the recording studio he was to the point and proper , permitting no
Nonsense .

Bette actually approached Susan and asked Susan to play her in a biopic. This was not long after B.D.'s book was released, and Bette was heartbroken.

Susan declined. She thought that she wasn't ready to tackle a role like that. But Bette specifically asked for Susan Sarandon.

interesting trivia... thanks for sharing

I think Davis would find it hilarious, and relish that it unmasked Crawford's hangups and insecurities. She was the more down-to-earth and practical of the two, and would figure that any publicity was good publicity.

Crawford would have a heart attack over it....and also whine that Jessica Lange was too "dreadfully overweight" to play her...or some such petty, superficial gripe.
