I think it works, but it gets a lot of points for having the main character be a self-proclaimed movie buff.
It draws from that same well of pulpy L.A. detective shaggy dog mystery as The Big Lebowski and that recent Colin Farrell series Sugar.
Ooh, splendid choice! Since they were great friends for decades, the most appropriate pairing for Elvira would be Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
