To those who are not aware, the term "ronin" means samurai without a master. From Wikipedia:

The Christmas morning scene reminds me of the Christmases I had as a child, and every time I watch it I cry happy tears and wish my Mom and Dad were still alive. I had a wonderful childhood (And I am starting to tear up as I type this!)

No, I didn't miss the point. The point I understood is that the aliens were not afraid of anything. They would sacrifice themselves to help their cause. The insurgents (both in Vietnam and Iraq) were not afraid to die for their cause. (Suicide bombers?)
I agree that military is meant to fight military, not small groups of insurgents. There is a good example in our own history. When the British tried to invade the colonies, they were dressed in red uniforms (hence the term "redcoats") and our members were dressed in clothing they could hide in. Same thing. Groups of insurgents can do a lot of damage.
But, we are talking an alien invasion film anyways, so the point is really moot. In truth no one can equate what happens in the wars on our planet amongst our own people in comparison to what happens in an alien invasion. At least, let's hope we never find out!

You really believe we defeated a third world military? They are made up of groups of insurgents! The reason we lost in Vietnam was because of insurgents! It also didn't help that we didn't really understand why we were in Vietnam. Same goes for Iraq. Why were we really there? Oil.
I feel sorry for you, if you wouldn't protect those that you claim to love. I know my parents would have walked through fire for me. Why? Because my dad did!
Except that after the creatures investigated that sound, they would have discovered it was nothing and probably returned to the daughter.
With all due respect to the OP - the movie audience only really were exposed to the family and the environs surrounding them. We had no idea what was really happening in the rest of the world. For all we know, the world's best minds had figured it out.
We were only privy to the family's plight. That was not a plot hole.
Also in answer to the other posters comments:
"The monsters seemed pretty easy to kill..." No they weren't. they were heavily armored, with the exception of their auditory area. That is were the Mom shot the creature in the end.

Not silent, but quieter. I have worked in a printing shop. Also, most printing shops are in concrete and brick buildings. That material dampens sound very well. When the presses were running in the last shop I worked in, you could not hear them outside the building.

I have a theory about why some people laugh at horror films. I am not a psychologist or a psychiatrist, but I have read articles concerning people's different reactions to horror films. Why some people have nightmares after seeing a horror movie, and others laugh.
According to what I have read, laughter is a psychosomatic release for inner terror. Some people who laugh at horror films are not laughing because it is funny to them, but to release their fear, induced by the images on the screen.
Horror films are a good way to release tension, they also help us confront the idea of death in the safety of the motion picture theater. We all know that one day, we will die. Watching a horror film can be a relaxing catharsis.
