Great series

Aside from the terrible English dubbing. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to watch something similar to Spartacus, or if they're into historical shows on ancient Rome.

reply

Is there a version without the dubbing and that has subtitles?

reply

On Netflix you can set the voice options. It's very cool to watch with them actually speaking German and Latin. Instead of English with German and British accents....

reply

That's what I watched. I liked the subtitles version too. Deutsch ist gut!!!

reply

I don't get the English dubbing for the Barbarians but then the Romans are not dubbed and speak Latin instead. Why not jus have everyone speaking the proto-lingua of the day and be done with it? The American-English vernacular is particularly irritating to me as it comes across as Straight-to-DVD action flick dialogue

reply

Not saying they are managing it well, but I think the idea is that the Germans are supposed to sound like the viewer, and as this is a German series, they speak modern (not old) German. The Romans are supposed to seem alien and difficult to make sense of, hence (attempting) correct period Latin. So they flip the German to modern English, but probably got it done at a bargain dubbing studio.

reply

Yeah, I think the POV goal was to show us this conflict thru the eyes of the "Barbaren" who in this case are the Germanic tribes. Thinking about it more, it serves as a contrast to movies like Gladiator where the Romans were the establishment, spoke with mostly British accents and everyone else who wasn't Roman spoke English with their native accent (ie - Hagen and Juba).

reply

hmmm, i'm watching it and the germans speak ... german? with subtitles, of course.

but i find it way bellow vikings ...

reply

In the US they dub their voices in American English

reply

I'm in the US ...

have you tried to change the audio to the original stream?

reply

Yes I have that option but the default is American English, but the vernacular sounds too American if you get my meaning. Unlike Vikings where the non-Scandinavian actors speak English but with a slight accent to lend some authenticity. I don't speak much German so it wouldn't help 🤷

reply

Agreed. It felt really out of place when guy called someone an ass hole.

reply

Id rather read subtitles than be thrown off by dubbing. German and latin are easy to listen to as well

reply

The show is very well made. Not big budget but authentic enough. The script is good and the plot sets up a lot of conflicts. The heroine is fierce, but not some unbelievable warrior who can wipe out squads of Roman soldiers single-handedly, like in most other action movies these days.

reply

I watched it with subtitles, much better than dubbed!

reply

Hmmm, maybe the dubbed version could add some extra fun. ☺

But you should definitely watch Grimm (2011-2017) in the original.
All these Wessen! 🤣
