R rating for pro-life movie ‘Unplanned’ laughable, wrong

R rating for "some disturbing/bloody images". Almost as bad as TV shows!

I notice Imdb has no news for this title. Opening on 1000 screens Thur.

The one thing the producers of the movie “Unplanned” had not planned on was the film getting an R rating, which means children under 17 are not permitted without an adult.

It seems pretty odd that a movie with no foul language, no gratuitous sex, no violence, no naked bodies, no wild shootings or car chases racking up dead bodies and mangled vehicles would get a rating equal to movies like “Kill Bill,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Die Hard.”

Having just seen the movie in a private screening, I would say its R rating is downright laughable, which makes one think that it is simply an overtly political reaction. What this movie does show is the reality of abortion, and the political power and money Planned Parenthood wields as the No. 1 abortion provider in the country.

The movie is based on the true story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director who, when she witnesses an actual surgical abortion, becomes so traumatized that she quits and becomes part of the pro-life movement.

The movie is honest and candid about Johnson's real-life encounter with abortion, showing her decision as a young college co-ed and, later, as an unhappily married woman to end two of her pregnancies. It also takes fair aim at overly aggressive pro-life protestors who hassle women coming into clinics.

The irony of rating a movie like this R, is that while it advises that children under 17 shouldn't see this movie without an accompanying adult, it fails to recognize that in at least 13 U.S. states, a teen under 17 can get an abortion without their parents' permission.

The people on the MPAA rating committee are obviously biased in favor of Planned Parenthood, and used the rating to make people not want to watch the movie. They failed.

My wife and I are seeing it tomorrow night.

I'm surprised one of the main movie theaters in town will be showing it, actually.

It'll be preaching to the choir. While I believe abortion is an insult to the female body, myself not being female, I defer to women to make that decision on their own. That said, the rabid pro-murder crowd will not go near this movie. They're not interested in learning diverse points of view.

They're trying to reduce the audience and scare away potential viewers.

Keith Mason, one of the producers of “Unplanned” said, "We could have appealed the R rating, but it would mean delaying the movie's release for another six months, maybe."

Didn't they learn anything from Mel Gibson's marketing? You use that time to gin up the "Us vs. Them" aspect of this movie. You take the time to have more screenings, showing friendly ministers that it really didn't earn the R rating. You hold rallies, you speak on courthouse steps, you do interviews until you're exhausted -- all the time making sure that the public knows this is the movie THEY didn't want you to see. By the time you're done, it won't even matter if they uphold the "R" rating -- the target audience will have had more than enough time to have heard about it and get the people to the theaters.

They just didn't want another "Gosnell" movie on their hands. We were repeatedly told it would be powerful but understated, and not gory. So they want folks to be afraid they'll see severed baby heads, which no one but the heartless butchers at Planned Parenthood would want to see.

The abortion scenes apparently exaggerate the severity of the process and are gruesomely bloody. It's not a steady progression. Every scene showing one is like that. The people at PureFlix knew what they were doing. They made it as bloody and gory as possible then play the victim card when the MPAA gave it the rating it deserves.

abortions are pretty fucked especially in the later trimesters. ur rippin a baby piece by piece while the poor sucka is still alive, i dont know how u can do that without a gruesomely bloody process...

I think they wanted the R rating despite their complaints. It reinforces two modes of thought for the target audience: how they view the process and their suspicion that the media (of which the MPAA is an extension) is biased against anything pro-life.
