Slow, Plodding, Boring, Complex

I really miss the 1 hour episodic Star Treks.
Present a problem, tackle it, come out by the skin of your teeth, dominate it, on to next week.
I hate having to wait to watch 8 hours before a punch line is delivered. Which is what I sense happening here - after episode 3.
I bailed.

reply

Totally agree..you're wise to bail

reply

I so absolutely agree. ST:Discovery is just as bad. CBS has messed up this franchise.

reply

Ya, I bailed on ST:Discovery as well.

reply

Which 1hr episodic Treks are you referring to? Pretty sure before Discovery and Picard, the other shows were 30 minute long episodes (some expanding to multiple episodes for one epic battle/ending scene). Now they're GoT length episodes.

reply

How young are you? There has never been 30 minute episodes other than a brief animated cartoon spin-off.

reply

Not that young. I just never took notice of them to be that long (probably because I was hooked by the stories they tell and time just flew by). I stand corrected that they're not 30 minute episodes but they definitely weren't 1 hour episodes either.

The Original Series - 79 episodes - 50 minutes each - 3,950 minutes total
The Animated Series - 22 episodes - 23 minutes each - 506 minutes total
The Next Generation - 178 episodes - 44 minutes each - 7,832 minutes total
Deep Space Nine - 176 episodes - 43 minutes each - 7,568 minutes total
Voyager - 172 episodes - 43 minutes each - 7,396 minutes total
Enterprise - 98 episodes - 42 minutes each - 4,116 minutes total
Discovery - 11 episodes - avg. 45 minutes each - 495 minutes

Picard also averages around 44 minutes.

reply

LOL has it been that long that people forget? I'm getting old.
43 min shows back then WERE 1 hour shows on network TV with commercials.
TNG wouldve been something like Thursdays CBS 8-9pm

Also what I mean is that back then, you weren't watching an 8 hour plotline.
Each 1 hr had a beginning, middle and end which would have nothing to do with the next episode.
And if you didn't like that episode, then you didn't have much skin in the game, only 1 hour.
But these days, you could be 5 hours deep before you can make a judgement of WTF is this? I don't like it. But now you've wasted/invested 5 hours that you'll never get back.
Sometimes you go on til the end but your instinct at that point is usually proven correct. I always cut-bait now. Like I did with Picard.

Yes all the Star Treks were mostly episodic, with "Star Trek: Enterprise" having some 2 part episodes and I think 1 season there was a large story arc throughout a season.

But yeah 8 hour story arcs need a superior story, superior story telling and acting to make it worth it.

reply

Picard was way better than all the other Star Treks. For once it felt like it was made for adults. It was complex but never boring. The only false note was the last episode, which contained too much Star Trek schmaltz.

reply

Complex? lmao
