One thing I disliked...

...were the cameo appearances popping up for a couple of minutes during the film. "Oh, it's Colin Firth; Look, it's Mark Strong! Now here's Benedict Cumberbatch!" When Cumberbatch appeared, there were audible gasps, whispers and even chuckles from various points around the theatre.

1917 is a very good movie, but lesser-known character actors should have populated these tiny but key roles, I'd say.

You'd think they'd market that so people want to see the damn thing.

Trust Cumberbatch to play the DOUCHE who doesn't even LOOK at our hero's letter.

He did though - eventually. Made a remark about about how next week they'll order to attack. Then was a tad mollified and kinder in his approach to Schofield...

I thought that colonel was Benedict.

The Hurt Locker also had some well known actors playing small supporting roles.

So did Saving Private Ryan (Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti, Dennis Farina).

Well, it’s not like the appearances made in this film by the aforementioned actors have been kept a secret or anything (to say they’re all over the film’s marketing would be putting it mildly). Hell, I’m positive many are going into this film expecting these well-known faces to have bigger roles in it.

But nah, I can’t say that this was an issue for me (didn’t seem to bother my audiences, either). I appreciated their appearances. It was particularly great to see Benedict in it.
