I just hope this isn't going to turn into another police procedural

With the only difference being that they can predict or solve the crimes, sort of like in Minority Report.

I'm hoping it doesn't turn into another "The 4400".

reply

I never watched that one / don't know what it's about.

Bunch of people disappear for years. All come back at once. They are sent back to their previous lives. Then trouble starts so the government agents had to go get them back. Lasted less than a season.

reply

It was actually four seasons according to IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389564/?ref_=nv_sr_1

reply

I stand corrected. I swore it only lasted a few episodes. Thank you.

reply

I enjoyed the 4400.

reply

So, so far I am right. And the police case this episode felt very contrived.

reply

4400 analogy is also holding. They are demonstrating powers.

reply

What bothers me is that these powers seems to be different every episode.

And also now different for each individual.

reply

Maybe it's less about "having powers," as if they are superheroes, and more about receiving communication.

reply

Not outright sucking just yet. Decent acting. Still semi-enticed by the mystery.
But ... it does have the footprint of a drab cop proc. If the next episode is another "case" getting solved by voices then I think that's all I needed to see to jump ship.

reply

I think I enjoyed the second episode a little more than the first, actually.

Here's what I'll say: The show is quite interesting when the story focuses on the central mystery of the plane and the missing time. It is less interesting when it focuses on the interpersonal dynamics and the effect the event has had on everyone's relationships. And it is not interesting at all when it focuses on "solving cases."

Since both episodes have had all three, neither episode has been totally satisfying. But so far at least, there's been enough mystery to keep me interested in seeing what happens next.

The show is playing a precarious game, though. I am into it enough to stick with it . . . for now. But I feel like the show at any moment could make a misstep that sends my interest off a ledge and into the abyss.

Agreed.

reply

Yes, that was what I decided for myself as well.

reply

We can definitely be expecting a fresh case of mystical problem solving every episode. I think this will grow very tedious as every single problem is solved via deux ex machina.

reply

That's what I am afraid it will be, yes.

I wonder when someone pitched this idea to the network, why on earth did they think that would be an appealing formula to today's discerning public?

reply

As an aside, given the oddly wholesome nature of the show, having an almost Highway to Heaven sort of feel and topped off with various themes of doing the right thing for family, the violence at the end of ep 2 was incredibly jarring. I'm no longer sure what the tone of this show is intended to be.

reply

The end of ep 2 definitely took me off guard, I can say that.

It raised the question of what, or who, exactly the shadow person is, and if the shadow person is part of whatever caused the missing time in the first place.

I suspect the shadow person is not, and rather is a government agent (or agents) who has some Predator-like tech. But I guess we'll just have to find out.

I did NOT see that coming, and I was shocked. I think the show has now taken on a whole new dimension.
I'm enjoying it so far.
