Spoilers - So the explanation for the janitor character..

Is no explanation. Why does he have to drop everything and drink a pop when his wristwatch alarm goes off? Why does he not talk? What is it about him that he can kill the monsters and nobody else could.

Some kind of resolution would have made this movie better than just something to enjoy while stoned.

reply

I suspect he didn't speak because he was probably being paid by the word.

reply

Haha I made the same joke whilst watching this.

reply

Agreed I'd have liked some explanation as to why he didn't talk. I assumed he was PTSD or something I don't kniow. I also kept cringing every time he would crush those soda cans etc. Also like how was he
Expecxting to raise that girl
when he coulden't even speak. Silence is consent I guess when she got in the car.

reply

I figure he has PTSD as well. He seemed to be a war veteran in permanent “fight mode” ala fight-or-flight.

reply

Imagine thinking a movie as silly as this requires any explanation.

reply

Well I agree it is a very silly movie... but when you highlight specific actions in the movie that on the surface doesn't make sense... and never explain them... then it just seems like the director thought this could be cool so I will put it in the movie... Throughout the movie there is focus on him drinking these cans and setting his timer... this is higlighted when he leaves in the middle of a fight to do this because his timer goes off... Then there is this stupid scene of him playing the pinball machine, dancing and drinking one of his cans... while the girl fights for her life... If they have no intension of explaining this behaviour then just leave it out of the movie... but I guess the running time would barely have hit one hour... so I guess that was why they kept it in the movie...

People should just watch the trailer... this film works best as a 2 minute movie...

reply

I agree... Especially about the timer thing and his need to drink a pop... I can better accept not explaining him talking and even being able to kill the monsters as it does seem to me everybody should be able to kill them if they just tried...

reply

He was timing himself have a break, just like Tex told him too.

reply

Tex was expecting him to die... so nothing he told him should be of any value... The movie made a big number out of him having to drink those cans... so much that he has to leave in the middle of a fight to do it... so at least give us some sort of explanation...

reply

HE FOLLOWED THE RULES OF THE JOB...EXACTLY...EVEN DURING THE BLOODSHED...ITS AN OVERBEARING CHARACTER TRAIT...I LIKED THAT TOUCH.

reply

C'mon... it makes no sense... rules of the job??? Tex just mentions in a side remark remember to take some breaks... The way this movie presents his actions it seem like he has to take these drinks every hour... but it never cares to explain why...

reply

IT FALLS IN LINE WITH WHAT OTHERS SAID OF HIM BEING A VET WITH PTSD...FOLLOWING ORDERS TO THE LETTER AND SUCH.

reply

Still doesn't explain why he needs to drink these drinks... and I do not remember Tex saying he has to take a break each hour... just remember to take breaks...

reply

DUDE HAS A SCHEDULE AND A CRAVING FOR YUMMY POP...I GET IT.

reply

You might get it... but it is a lame explanation...

reply

He was a bad ass.

reply

I love Cage... just put him in a better movie... And I love B flicks... But this one isn't funny, scary or even has a decent story...

reply

Have you watched Pig yet?

I’ve watched nothing but his movies for weeks…it all started with Pig.

reply

Oh, and watch army of one. Sheer brilliance!

reply

Cool... haven't watched those yet... I will add them to my list:-)

reply

Pig was amazing.

Army of One was baffling, and it was based on a true person.

Mom and Dad is a Nicolas Cage must see.

Mandy is a Nicolas Cage overdose.

reply

I loved Mandy... Haven't watched Mom and Dad yet...

Some SPOILERS below.

I found myself over-analyzing it. I started thinking, "Is he able to defeat the monsters because he followed the rules?"

Hear me out, but what if Tex inadvertently casts spells? The serial killers use a Satanic ritual, so invoking magic like that in movies often leads to letter-of-the-law magic effects. What if part of their power comes from Tex, in a way? When Tex gives those "rules", and binds the victim with "You are officially on staff," maybe they're responsible for the animatronics (ie, only allowed to fight in self-defence), and they have to follow those rules. But, if they do follow those rules, the demon puppets aren't as powerful?

Or maybe there's something in the movie's themes here about hard work and discipline. The teenagers are all over the place, can't formulate plans, make irrational decisions, fail to act according to any discipline at all, and they get (mostly) wiped out. The Janitor has discipline, follows the rules, takes breaks, cares for himself, etc., and he mows them down. Maybe it's not a magic effect, per se, but a commentary on work ethics?

reply

I was thinking that maybe he survived one of the family attacks as a kid and that is why he doesn't talk.

reply

Sometimes it is best when a director leaves it up the audience's imagination. Do we really want to know what was in Marcellus Wallace's briefcase?

reply

Let's see - He follows some unseen rules to the letter, disregarding the safety of others when for example his alarm goes off.
He is seemingly superhuman compared to all others while fighting the monsters.
He says nothing to anyone

I would guess the idea behind this setting is that The Janitor is supposed to be a player-controlled character and the others are NPCs in a computer game. The inspiration behind the movie is also a game, so shouldn't be too far fetched.
