do you need star wars knowledge ...

to watch this?

Here is what I recommend you watch in this order.

1. The Original Trilogy
2. The Prequel Trilogy
3. The Clone Wars series
4. Star Wars Rebels series

If that is too much, then just the first two.

I would say no, it’s not necessary. But there is a lot of lore and references to the movies/ tv shows. The core story, however, stands on its own.

Since the series is 5 years after SW Episode VI, watching the original trilogy would help. Mandalorians do NOT appear.
The major appearances are in SW Clone Wars. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Mandalorian#Appearances
Never watched that. As long as you start The Mandalorian from the beginning you will be ok.

It wouldn't hurt! :-)

that counts me out.

Just watch it and enjoy it for what it is. I have seen Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I haven't seen all of the prequel movies and only one of the recent SW movies and I am perfectly happy just enjoying a fun and exciting show.

You can certainly get a good amount of fun out of the show without knowing who all the people are who show up as guests on the episodes. The show does tell you who they are. But the "Oh look, it's ______ !" will probably not be your reaction like it is for those of us who follow more of "Star Wars."

The original and prequel trilogies would probably be enough for most of the series. Though the Clone Wars would help explain some of the back story of Mandalore. Chapter 13 might be the first time where having seen some of The Clone Wars would help your understanding of who Ahsoka Tano was and why she didn't want to train Gorgu.

You'll get a hell of a lot more out of it if you watch at least the first three, 4, 5, and 6, or the very least the first one.

But I think it stands pretty nicely on its own. It's very much a western show about a mysterious gunslinger that goes from settlement to settlement, finding that he needs to help the locals to further his own goals. Or a ronin, if you prefer that.
