Why does Saoirse Ronan insist on wasting her time on these mediocre period films ?

If it's a strategy to win an Oscar it isn't working and it won't work this time either.

There has to be "at least" one alphabet themed Oscar bait movie that gets heavily promoted by Hollyweird each year now. It's a good strategy for anyone trying to get cheap & easy accolades in the industry.

She's gagging for an Oscar. Not least because the fawning Irish media will elevate her to Messianic status if she wins.

And of course the film about a lesbian fossil hunter has bombed at the Box Office. Wow, didn't see that one coming...

She's living out her exhibitionist fantasies. She wanted to have a roomful of crew members (and eventually every guy on the internet) watch her strip off and ride another woman's face, but needed the 'award-worthy period movie' cover so it didn't hurt her career.

She's the new Kate Winslet, so rather fitting she acts alongside the old one.

80% of the major roles available to actresses in her age groups are "the girl" roles. . You know, the hero's wife he has to rescue, or the hot girl he doesn't nail until the finale, or the beautiful girlfriend who puts up with all the hero's shit for the whole movie... she isn't right for those roles. I don't know if it's because her face and body aren't the usual plastic, or if she just lacks sexual chemistry with men, but period roles bring out the best in her abilities.

She has the rare gift of making stillness work for her as an actor, and modern people just aren't still. Plus, in period roles, she can get away with not being blatantly sexy. So I think she gets offered all the period films first, and not a lot of modern roles.

This one was a mediocrity, but a step up from the abysmal Mary Queen of Scots.

Brooklyn was lovely though and Atonement was good, so I guess she’s fine if she sticks to more recent period pieces.
