Oh my God! That twist!!!!

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone that was the least bit surprised by it? What an absolute failure.

reply

It was leaked a month before the series even aired.

reply

and yet no one mentioned it prior to it being revealed , very respectful of those in the know - surprising considering this page is 99% haters looking for new ways to shit on the series.

I'm a HATER of this series because it is just extremely expensive non-canon Tolkien FANFICTION. Why should I care about it or pay attention to it if JRR Tolkien himself never wrote it?

reply

well , theres plenty of movies where the sequels were written by someone else
Even more so in TV series
and non-canon fanfiction isnt necessarily bad per se .

I'm just surprised people who are determined not to like it have bothered investing the time to watch it.

reply

1. I'm not talking about movies, I'm (in this case) talking about LITERATURE. If JK Rowling died and later on, someone wrote a new Harry Potter novel or TV screenplay, I sure as fucking HELL would not watch it, because it would be Rowling FANFICTION! Don't you get my point, now?

2. I'm not wasting my time watching non-canon fanfiction. Because it's NON-CANON!!!

3. I didn't watch the later episodes of ROP, only the first and perhaps a bit of the second. I just prefer to watch honest critic reviews like Doomcock, Nerdrotic and Disparu as they forensically dissect the episodes to get my fix on how bad this show is. I find them far more entertaining, anyway.

reply

Fair enough , thats your choice .
I'm not saying its wrong , but sometimes new material by a new author isnt automatically unworthy , I'd take it on a case by case thing .

I bet Dr Who was had new stuff written not from the original author which was accepted.

reply

Surprised? no... I've read the book/seen the movies, so I had an idea of what might happen. Not that this is based on the books but it has some LOTR lore mixed in with the locations and story. I think the show did a fine job at presenting some of the LOTR legends and whatnot, but parts of it were just a bit ridiculous and could have played out so much better. I have to admit, I was hoping some of the characters actually died in the volcano scene...lol.

However, I'd give season 1 of LOTR:TROP a solid 7.2 out of 10. If I am to be honest, I kinda like it. Sure, it lacks consistency, some episodes were quite a bit more interesting than others but it stayed fairly entertaining throughout the whole season.

reply

Oh wow, you love Tolkien fanfiction.

(slow clap)

Fanfiction is going to be big business in the future. You could make some real money if you invest now.

Love it or hate it, it puts food on the table and gas in the car. It also keeps the coal burning which in turn, keeps the power turned on.

Fanfiction is the future, embrace it now or die by the wayside. Fanfictiion is the shindiggity....

reply

But in this case, it's not Tolkien! Do you really want to know that others will see this ROP crap in years to come, somehow possibly like it because they're such easily-sated individuals and then TRASH Jackson's superior LOTR trilogy???

reply

Lol, that's the beauty of film and television. Someone somewhere will like this more than the LOTR films.

In fact, I was going to start a thread about this topic entitled: 'this is better than the Jackson films' but I didn't want to upset anyone. Hahaha...

Ok... 7.2/10 is being generous but giving it something like a 2/10 would be kinda ridiculous too. RoP is not that bad but at the same time, it's not great either. There are however, some elements of the show I can appreciate and maybe, just maybe, enjoy.

I watch Nerdrotic you tube videos. And he said it when the first trailer aired that this guy is Sauron so I wasnt surprised. I kinda hoped that they would try to be original and make someone else. But nope.

He kept calling him Sauron every time he reviewed episode. Saying sarcastically "not-Sauron" and "not-Gandalf" on that tall guy )))

reply

I've watched his videos, too. His "Doogie Elrond" reference kills me. I snicker every time he's on the screen.

reply

Damn what a douche bag. Ruining it for everyone else who doesnt want to be spoiled. Sounds like someone I need to go out and block so that I don’t accidentally run into his videos anywhere.

reply

He didnt spoil since he didnt know. He just guessed that from the trailer because it was obvious to him. Because writers were that lazy. And I kinda hoped that writers would not be that stupid and be that obvious. But they did.

I think show made up 3 characters who werent in the books. Black Elf, weird tall guy and pretty face. So it could only be one of them. It was obvious that black elf isnt Sauron since he had his own love story. Tall guy looked like future Gandalf. And show portrayed him as good guy who was confused. That leaves us with slippery, devious, canny pretty face who showed up out of nowhere and for no reason become main character and hanging out with Galadriel. Remember that she just bumped into him in the sea and then everyone on that raft conveniently died. It was kinda obvious that only this guy can be Sauron.

reply

I rather enjoy Nerdrotic. He just says it like it is, and doesn't care if people call him names or yell at him about it. It's because of him that I've avoided seeing some really nasty entertainment from streaming, including this dumpster fire of a show.

reply

What surprised me was the writers spent so much time trying to build up Galadriel as some great and righteous female figure, discovering evidence of Sauron's return when none of the elves would listen. Then in the finale, they basically make her responsible for the entire War of the Ring.

Sauron literally told Galadriel that she helped him let go of his past and gave him the ambition to seize control of Middle-earth. He, again, literally told her not to warn the others about him, to simply let the work of crafting the rings continue and that's exactly what that idiot did, except to suggest crafting a third ring.

There was no reason not to warn everyone; Sauron deceived Celebrimbor and Elrond as well, it's not like she was the only one to fall for his deception. The elves, dwarves, and men all could have been warned about Sauron's return and ambitions. Then maybe the elves would have been suspicious of some guy, claiming to be the Lord of Gifts, giving away secrets of magic ring crafting shortly after. If not, maybe some of the dwarves or men would have been suspicious of some guy handing out magic rings shortly after that.

It HAD to happen that way, because ROP is a PREQUEL, and otherwise, there would be no LOTR AT ALL, nor The Hobbit!

This is what gets me with modern studios over the last 20 years: why do they think they can make more money out of so many PREQUELS, which innately SUCK as we all know how they're going to TURN OUT!

reply

I understand that that Sauron's ascent is a certainty, as the show is a prequel, but it didn't need to make Galadriel's stupidity the linchpin of his success. My point was that the writers failed to create a compelling reason for why Galadriel would hide such a critical piece of information.

I agree with you that so many prequels fail because the audience essentially already knows the ending, like the ROP writers trying and failing to build suspense around Isildur's "death".

reply

Yeah, you're right about Galadriel! As the AVGN famously used to demand: "WHAT were they THINKING???" :/

reply

I was surprised. I don't feel like it was "earned" however. I like the show overall, but this "ah-ha" moment did not work for me.
