They were trying to emulate that Shawshank Redemption style narration,
but it only worked there because MORGAN.EFFING.FREEMAN.

Not just that - the movie was better written and had a better flow to it overall.

…Well done in my opinion.
Also, the narration was voiced by the author of the novel, Donald Ray Pollack. I enjoyed its inclusion, he’s got a great voice and and it’s a pretty cool easter egg as well, for fans of the author that is.
