So the best way to not be called a freak because of a scar is to make yourself really look like a freak?

Not only that it will make you look cool to dimwits.

the difference is that with the mohawk, he looked like a freak by choice rather than by misfortune. More importantly, the mohawk certainly draws attention away from the lip. And more importantly than that, it wasn't just the mohawk - he changed his dress sense, got tattoos, and above all changed his attitude to be more of an aggressive "alpha" type. If he'd just got the mohawk but carried on wearing 1970s hand-me-down sweaters and being timid, chances are he would still be called a freak, maybe even more so.
In short, he flipped the script.
Hawk, fall in.

Pretty much. It was all about taking control of his own freakiness.

And Lawrence gave the kid real world advice by being mean to him and telling him that "people are not gonna act nice with you, you really DO have to toughen up and stand up for yourself to live a better life". Very anti-pc but genuine solid advice. Thankfully the kid became Hawk and toughened up instead of running home and just barricading himself in his room to remain a "loser".

He got tough love and was better for it!

On the post-secret website (where people send in "confessions" in postcard format), someone once posted a close-up of a face with multiple piercings.

The "confession" was: "You think I do this to make people look at me. I actually do it so they won't look too closely."

I couldn't help but think of that confession when I saw this thread.

But yeah, I agree with the other responses - it wasn't just a mohawk; Eli "flipped the script" on his whole self-image and became the person he wanted to me instead of letting others choose for him.
