"Mad" Magazine and Rick Dalton (SPOILERS)

Mad Magazine has announced that it will be closing down soon.

Mad and its cover boy "Alfred E. Neumann" have been part of American(and international?) life for decades, but Mad was really big in the fifties, sixties, and seventies.

The early fifties Mad was an outgrowth of EC Horror Comics, which had been put out of business by Congress. The gory drawings of Tales from the Crypt became the very GROSS drawings of early Mad Magazine, but as the 60's came on, new artists were recruited and Mad got more...sophisticated?(even for pre-teen boys, the main audience.)

With Mad getting ready to close its doors, I was pleased to see that the new Quentin Tarantino movie makes heavy mention of Mad magazine...principally showing how Mad magazine once put TV hero Jake Cahill(Rick Dalton, aka Leo DiCaprio) on its cover, and how a TV Guide cover drawn by Mad's Jack Davis, uses a cartoon version of Rick Dalton.

Leo's Rick Dalton has framed copies of both the Mad magazine cover and the "Mad"-like TV Guide cover framed on his wall...a TV star would be proud to be deemed important enough to be spoofed by Mad circa 1958-1962.

And turnabout is fair play...I was in the supermarket a day or two ago and on the magazine rack was a NEW Mad Magazine...with the Rick Dalton cover. I guess before it closes down completely, Mad is going out with a bang, courtesy of Quentin Tarantino.

Oh, so that was an actual issue Mad released, not just a prop for the movie? Cool.

Well, it turns out to be BOTH. It IS a prop in the movie but...I opened up the supermarket issue with "Rick Dalton" on the cover and it looked like the articles inside were not "fake" (about Rick Dalton) but rather about new TV shows and movies.

Still..the "Rick Dalton MAD cover" will be a collectors item. You can probably find it at your local store or newsstand.

I have seen it on magazine stands for years. No wonder it's shutting down. There are four in the local mall, I'll look for it.

they only have themselfes to blame.... the last 3 years all they did was trump bashing.
And also, in this PC SJW era, you can't make fun of anyone, with the feminists and pussifed men or gays getting offended and "mad" ... LOL
very sad news, but again, i hated the last few years issues.... way too much Trump bashing, it was a fucking stupid move by them. And i am European btw

a shame, i liked sergio aragones comics and the other non trump bashing stuff they had.... but it's clear why they are closing. , and THEY WILL NEVER ADMIT IT

It had to be this, and stuff like this was on the cover, issue after issue for 3 years!

Print magazines are dropping like flies, cutting down on page count, number of issues per year, and even vanishing altogether. The vast majority of them had nothing to do with politics at all, e.g., Macworld (gone), Playboy (going, going . . .). The digital era is overwhelming print, and the ONLY perspective you can see is your guy Trump. Not impressive, Tommy boy.

sales numbers are way down, magazine is closing after 67 years..... you are of course calling it a coincidence. Only a true moron can't see they dug their own grave

also. how can you compare these with the putin-trump drawing, with gay and submissive overtones.

obama is smoking, carter is missing a tooth...... come on, even you can see the difference !
