How did this become popular in America?

There are plenty of good foreign films out there. How does this one, essentially out of nowhere (maybe I'm wrong that's why I'm asking) foreign movie end up nominated for a bunch of awards, in theaters an extended period of time and hitting greatest movies of all time lists?

reply

Because a hipster in Los Angeles decided that it would become popular.

It felt like it was made to appeal to the Academy Awards jury and Americans in general: the rich mom being impressed with Jessica's degree from Illinois State University, and that tent which was waterproof because it was made in the USA. Include some social criticism and slow-motion scenes with classical music playing in the background and you get a profound and thoughtful film.

It wasn’t out of nowhere. Much of the world had seen Parasite long before it’s opening in America and it was already a sensation around the world. For once, America was among the last to see a widely loved movie.

reply

Because it was really good.
