Not bad, pretty much exactly what I expected

For anyone who doesn't know, History has released ths first episode on demand ahead of the network premiere.

I watched it last night. I thought it was pretty good, but lacked any real surprises. Essentially the show was exactly what I expected based on the trailers.

It has solid production values, a cool visual look, and it's good to see Littlefinger again, but the story, while interesting, feels kind of predictable and I also found the dialogue to sometimes be a bit difficult to understand. Still, it's good to see the Blue Book story come to the screen, albeit in dramatized form.

Overall, a 6.5 or 7.

Where is it available to watch? I love Laura Mennell who plays Littlefinger's wife.

reply

I found it on Comcast OnDemand but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere.

reply

I live in Canada. I'll have to see if I can find it somewhere. Perhaps on the History On Demand channel. Thanks for responding.

reply

Well if nothing else, if you have the History channel, the episode premieres in two days on the 8th.

reply

Yep. Thanks again. :)

I thought it was all right. Same premise as the X-Files, but seems to be loosely based on real events.

reply

Well in fact I'm pretty sure that The X-Files was inspired largely by the real-life Project Blue Book. But yes, it does have something of an X-Files feel.

As you say, it's all right. Nothing groundbreaking and nothing that offers much in the way of surprises.

But it's still early days. We'll see how the show shapes up from here.

I'm pretty well read on the subject. Even seen all the Ancient Aliens on the topic. I'm not expecting to get much out of this. I just hope it's well made and doesn't feel like a hokey re-enactment like these things sometimes do.

reply

It strays too far from the facts to feel like a re-enactment. On a production level, I thought it felt a bit cheap at times but overall I liked the look and feel, and thought it was pretty well-acted.

Aiden Gillen is great as Hynek.

Imdb open for reviews, only one now: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7558618/
Ep 1.1 is loosely based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorman_dogfight.

X-files is based on UFO conspiracy theories, mostly Roswell crash and Bob Lazar (1989, who they never credit).

reply

Surprised to see a score of 9.1. That's very high.

I'll be curious to see what the general reaction is from regular viewers as more reviews come in. Currently it has a 50% on RT.

I think the X-Files pulled from a lot of different things, but the idea of a department within the FBI that is exclusively focused on investigating anomalous phenomena seems to clearly derive most of its inspiration from Project Blue Book (and its predecessors Project Sign and Project Grudge).

I just finished binge watching the first four episodes, and I think it's very good: 8/10. Looking forward to episode 5.

I don't know anything about this show, the only thing I watch on History is Forged in Fire. Being on the History channel I would expect a lot of red herrings, old debunked mysteries recycled as new mysteries, and mostly speculation or "what ifs" but no answers. I was really into UFO's back in the 70's but can't take it seriously anymore.
